Christmas is a special time of the year, at least it used to be. Back in the day it was celebrated, today it has become not a celebration of love or forgiveness but a commercialization of consumerism. For those with a family, especially a young family the holiday can still be a special but for those with distant families or no family the holiday is just another day out of 365 days. Because the decorations and commercialism reaches beyond Thanksgiving it becomes over-saturated and evokes feelings of disgust and is overwhelming at times.

The intense examination of everything in this day and age has also jaded Christmas. When I grew up Christmas was celebrated as the birth of Christ, our Savior, the one who took all our sins in his great sacrifice on the cross. What greater gift has anyone ever given than Christ gave? Sure we had Santa but it was a holiday of gift giving, of comradeship with neighbors and friends and even strangers. Today we have lost that closeness and no where is that more evident than in Washington.

Dabs, I can feel your "want it over already" and I get disgusted with all the commercialism of it all but just sit and listen one night to the old Christmas songs and think back and reminisce on the old days when Christmas was special. Sometimes memories are all we have for this holiday but there are people, kids and families who are making memories of their own this month. So even though you may feel down and out, deep down does not the Silent Night bring joy to your heart and tears to your eyes?
