Youve got your hollywood movies mixed up.. CONFERENCE presentations are pretty damn anticlimatic.. More often mashups of previous publications and retreads.. By the time you defend a paper at conference, you are not likely to get questions that would cause you to cry.. However, defending a Masters or Doctorate thesis ---- now THERES a slight probability of tears involved.. Mostly from lack of sleep and poor diet tho.....

Happens all the time.. You get an invitation to present your recent work. Ive got 4 invites to International conferences on signal and image processing.. They got what they wanted, and i got 4 more published papers in the proceedings..

I was thinking of a movie about a bright chinese immigrant student that learns his prof is stealing his work and blocking his doctorate...

Btw... The gross grad student abuse depicted in Dark Matter ROUTINELY OCCURS. The more press worthy the topics, the worse it gets. And for those of you with rosy pictures of the justice and purity of peer review ----- the situation only gets WORSE once you get credentialed. The primadonna attitudes and petty competitions are a Blight on the process. And the politics of publishing saps a lott of creativity and innovation out of research.

It is just that in my experience, if you don't know your beans, you'll (most of the time) be sniffed out quickly. It's not like we publish based on two data points and a political agenda (as many mistakenly believe)

And yes, I've read Feynman. Definitely the most entertaining autobiography I've read so far...

Some days you dont know beans.. Other days you get awards. Its not a death sentence for most. But what you SHOULD KNOW about SOME modern science fields.. is that they never had that sense of absolute honesty and humility that guys like Feyman had. Most of my mentors taught when it was acceptable to "hard sell" an idea.. And when it was dishonest and dangerous to leave shit out and make outrageous claims.....
