School Sued Over Muslim Teacher's Pilgrimage

If I worked in a Muslim country, would they let me take a couple weeks off for Christmas or Easter? I have a feeling they would tell me to fuck off.

High Gravity, are you suggesting we should reshape the US constitution to resemble the law of Iran more? If not, the legal systems of other nations is mainly irrelevant.

There's a tension between the right to work and the right to worship for Americans. We are accomodating of the christians, less so of adherents of any other faith. Don't you suppose there are more'n a few devote Jews who've resented being asked to work on a Saturday before now?

All that's new about this story is, the religion and its practices are not familiar to us and the requests for accommodation seem extreme. But we'll survive.

I'm not saying we should be like Iran, I'm just saying if you lived and worked in a Muslim country and asked for a month off of work for Christmas or another Christian holiday, they would laugh in your face. You would be lucky to even get the Christmas day itself off. Why are Christians made to disregard their beliefs in Muslim lands but when Muslims come here we have to bend over backwards to accomodate them? how come I don't hear about any Buddhist or Hindu teachers asking for months off during the school year? how come its always Muslims making the news with this stuff?

She quit her job and wasnt fired.
She has no case.
She is a muslim, so she will walk away with an ass load of taxpayer cash.

American Muslims are not always immigrants, High Gravity. Some were born here, some converted. but no matter -- each is ruled by US law, just as you and I are. I suspect these stories make the news as editors are sensitized to all things Muslim, and because the religion is still fairly unknown to most Americans.

I dun think Buddist have any sacred days, really, unless you count the Chinese New Year. I have no idea what Hindus may have in this way.

We just need to accommodate and learn to get along...eventually, this will be behind us and no longer news worthy. Meanwhile, it's a typical American problem.

Please provide evidence or link that Christians in muslim lands are denied time off from work to celebrate their holidays, :doubt:

Ask the millions of workers from Southeast asian countries who do manual labor in the Gulf, they only get 1 day off during the week Friday, and sometimes not even that. They would get punched in the mouth if they asked for a month off for Christmas, in Saudi Arabia they don't even have Churches for them to practice their faith. I have been to Kuwait and seen this all for myself, it is nothing new and it is the truth. If you don't believe me talk to anyone whos been to a Muslim country if Christians get any time off for any religious holidays.

It's called a sabbatical.

If you plan things out long in advance with the school department, you might be able to arrange for one...if you've worked there for more than ONE year.

The thing is you are right, not all Muslims are immigrants and Muslims have been in the US for some time now, I remember reading about Muslim immigrants coming in from Syria and Lebanon in the early 1900s. There are also alot of Black Muslims in the Nation of Islam and 5 Percenters who are American citizens, are all of these people getting a month off during the year to make hajj from their work?

No, and as I understand it, the pilgrimage is a once in a lifetime event, which is one reason this lady will almost certainly lose. Why not wait until after she retires, if that's the case? Why didn't she go before she began working?

Thats what I'm saying, Muslims have been in this counry for a long time, working and living among us and they made time on their schedule to make hajj without causing a media spectacle and requesting a month off from work. This surely cannot be a new phenomenon.

So? She does not get special treatment because of her religion. Period.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says she does.

Any bets she won't win her case? :eusa_angel:

If she wins her case it will be because of some dumb liberal judge. Common sense is on the rise in the USA. This is not about civil rights. No one is stopping her from going to Mecca on her own time. She is not being denied her civil rights. She will lose.

Probably not. It's possible that Muslims are pressing their case harder in reaction to the uptick in Islamophobia here, or that because of it, every little thing gets reported, or both.

Either way, I predict in 5 years you won't read one such story a year. We have a good enough legal system to sort out such disputes without a total social breakdown, no matter what the bigots may think.

Why does every thread concerning Muslim Americans have to devolve into;

well in Saudi Arabia they do this, and in Iran and Egypt, they do that, etc., etc., etc.

The case is about an American citizen.

Teaching in an America school.

Being represented by a U.S. government agency.

And will be handled here in America in a U.S. Federal Court.

Go ahead dumb fuck cite for us the religious observances a Christian would ask for 3 weeks off for during a school year.

Rumor has it you can still visit Mecca in the months of June, July, and August.

she can't perform hajj then, try learning about other religions before spouting off

i see no big deal with a one time 3 week request...teachers get that leave all the time for illnesses etc...its a reasonable request

To a radical unAmerican communist/ socialist like yourself Jack Flake.

Our judicial system is a joke and only works correctly when it goes your way. :doubt:

3 weeks off during a school year is neither reasonable nor should it be mandated for a single religion. What next, the demand that prayer rugs be set up for Muslims to pray 5 times a day IN SCHOOL? Maybe as New York illegally did a few years back set up special prayer rooms during Muslim Holidays but none for any other religion?

Go ahead provide us some examples of 3 week breaks for other religions in the middle of a school year.

Well you asked me to provide proof that Christians get denied religious holidays in Muslim countries, and I gave you that. There are Muslim countries with Christian minorities like Syria, Lebanon etc but they are lucky to even get that day off.

The teacher has all summer vacation to go to Mecca.

Your wrong as usual Jack Flake.

The woman wanted to perform the mandatory Hajj not take a vacation.

Currently, the Hajj takes place around October and not during the summer months.
