Parents Who Don't Volunteer Would Face $100 Fine

CLEVELAND -- It's no secret that schools need volunteers in order to do more for students, but one proposed law in Indiana would make it a requirement for parents to volunteer at their children's school.

Parent Darlene Boyd has been volunteering at her grandchildren's school for six years. If the state legislature passes House Bill 519, she'll have a lot of company, Cleveland station WEWS reports.

The bill would require all parents to volunteer 13 hours each school year, either in the lunchroom, chaperoning field trips, or wherever the district needs help.

Research shows parents' involvement leads to student success, but Cleveland schools CEO Eugene Sanders said volunteerism is almost impossible to legislate.

"If there's a way to encourage it, create incentives -- that's the better way. The difficulty is what are your options to address it if it doesn't occur? Your legal options are limited in that kind of setting," Sanders said.

The bill's incentive is a $100 fine for parents who don't fulfill the requirement.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Academy Principal Sam Vawters said he can always use more parent volunteers, but he doesn't think that's the way to do it.

And Boyd agrees: "I wouldn't want anyone to be forced to come here. Either you want to be here or you don't."

According to the bill, if a parent doesn't fulfill the requirement and refuses to pay the fine, the money would be taken out of the parent's state tax refund.

House Bill 519 is sponsored by Sandra Williams (D-Cleveland) from District 11. You can e-mail her at [email protected].

I have no problem with requiring participation from people that use government resources. You have kids in public school? If the school needs help and can not get it from volunteers, no problem, though the requirements and penalties would require a LOT of work.

I personally think every person 16 to 40 should be in a State sponsored militia. Local Communities run their militias and could use them for things like this. Freedom is NOT actually FREE.

I agree 100%....nothing wrong with involving parents in their kids' education.

I think in Israel they require everyone to serve at least two years in the military after they get out of school. I'm not positive but I think it's them.

I agree with the militia too.

I think it's bullshit. We're becoming more and more a police state by the day and the sheeple just sit around and watch it happen.

Really Gunny? I guess the "REQUIRE" part would be have to considered in this situation...however, parents should be more involved in their kids education.

My question is, if you can't force an 18 year old senior to stay in school, how are you going to "force" a full grown adult to come to school?

Everyone already supports public schools...we all pay for them.

I suggest you do some research. What you will discover is that for the most part schools in just about every local are paid not by the public but by LAND owners. And more recently by those playing the lottery.

My oldest's Saturday school is private and some form of rotating participation is 'required' to the extent that everyone does and the social pressure is effective. Today was my turn to monitor one of the hallways during breaks. When everyone helps, work is done quickly and easily. Now, if the Gub'ment told me I HAD to, they would be cordially invited to kiss my ass.

That's one of the things that most private schools require of the parents of their students if they accept them.

You like slavery. To hell with government schools. They are the reason kids are brainwashed AGAINST the Constitution. Those who understand the Constitution understand it exists to LIMIT the power of the federal Godvernment. That goes against the interest of Godvernment and its worshippers

Kids are NOT "brainwashed against the Constitution" in public school.

No one is making any one put their kids in public school.

The more liberals you give power the less freedom you will have. It is a one-to-one relationship.

I'm a conservative, and this is a stupid conservative talking point.

Did you dredge up this moldy old fossil for any reason, kid?
