Newsflash: Social Security has already been looted. Look in the "lock box trust fund": nothing there but IOUs from the gov't. The money collected every year goes to the government's general fund and they spend it, leaving an IOU called a treasury bond.
The system will go bankrupt in a few years as liabilities are outstripping income. This is so because there are fewer workers paying into the system and more retirees who are living longer.
At some point the system will be insolvent and no one will get paid.
To forestall that they will need to cut benefits, extend the retirement age, raise taxes, or some combination.
Pres Bush had an excellent program that was shamefully torpedoed by the AARP and other lobbyists using the same scare tactics that Joe Steel likes to engage in.
Again, a gov't that treats you like an idiot doesn't gets the support it deserves.
