The late great Bear Flag Republic
Pakistan, that US ally in the war on terror and likely harborer of Bin Laden, has some troubling news:

Radio Spreads Taliban’s Terror in Pakistani Region

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Every night around 8 o’clock, the terrified residents of Swat, a lush and picturesque valley a hundred miles from three of Pakistan’s most important cities, crowd around their radios. They know that failure to listen and learn might lead to a lashing — or a beheading.

That kind of reminds me of the two way TV described in 1984, but the Taliban make that society seem open by comparison.

So, why not call the cops?

Last year, 70 police officers were beheaded, shot or otherwise slain in Swat, and 150 wounded, said Malik Naveed Khan, the police inspector general for the North-West Frontier Province.

The police have become so afraid that many officers have put advertisements in newspapers renouncing their jobs so the Taliban will not kill them.

Or the army?

When the army does act, its near-total lack of preparedness to fight a counterinsurgency reveals itself. Its usual tactic is to lob artillery shells into a general area, and the results have seemed to hurt civilians more than the militants, residents say.

Does the local populace support these terrorists? Well, no:

“The local population is totally fed up, and if they had the chance they would lynch each and every Talib,” said Mr. Naveed Khan, the police official. “But the Taliban are so cruel and violent, no one will oppose them. If this is not stopped, it will spill into other areas of Pakistan.”

The Taliban are the real terrorists. We might be fighting them in Afganistan, but they are going to come across the border, and could just take over pakistan.

Iraq certainly had a repressive government, but it didn't have anything like the Taliban. Pakistan, unlike Iraq, is a nuclear power, and is struggling to keep from becoming a terrorist state.

Scared yet?

The Taliban has not changed their stripes. In the Spring of 2001, they blew up the images of Buddah, that had been carved in mountains for over a thousand years.

Their alliance with al Quaeda is no accident. They were the ones that caused the war on terrorism. I back Obama in going after al Quaeda in Afghanistan or Pakistan, without the routing of that leadership, no way is any dealing with Taliban possible. Even if eradicate al Quaeda, the Taliban will remain a problem. They are the back to the past that bin Laden hoped for.

As we draw down the troops in Iraq, we will increase our presence in Afghanistan.

Don't hope for any quick solutions. Military commandes have aready said what worked better in Iraq won't work in Afghanistan.

We aren't the first to try and conquer them. It won't be done on the battle field alone. It will take some very good and dangerous covert operations to get inside them.

We also need to work with the populace to make their lifes better and safer. Until they trust US more than they fear the Taliban, we are just pissing into the desert sand.

A success may mean no more than the Taliban can no longer inflict any major damage.

One of these days we will realize that conventional tactics don't work in unconventional wars.

Have you been paying attention to what's happening in Mexico?

I'm not worried about Pakistan or Mexico. Obama is gonna' handle it all just fine with diplomacy. Besides, we don't have any enemies anymore now that Club GITMO is closing.
The deficit's gonna' be be retired too. Just you wait and see.

While we're trying to win the hearts and minds of the people by being nice to them, the Taliban seem to be following the dictum that if you get them by the balls, their hearts and minds will follow. You've got to admit that's a pretty strong argument.

As I understand it, Obama's plan is to first help settle the Kashmir problem and enlist India's aid in persuading Pakistan it is safe to move troops from the India-Pakistan border to the areas where the Taliban are and then to provide counter insurgency training to Pakistani troops. It sounds like a reasonable plan if he can figure out a way to get the Kashmir problem settled, but right now I don't like the odds he will be able to do that.

You see? When the Russians were there, these guys were freedom fighters but now that the Russians are gone, they're terrorists. Apparently the Russians had an uplifting moral influence on these guys.

So the Taliban blew up a couple of Buddah statues.

Big deal

There aren't any Buddhist in Afghanistain and it's their country.

So who cares!!!

Many. They were icons of long ago civilizations. However you are correct in saying the Taliban would not appreciate such. Nor would the ignorant and violent Muslims, not to mention the very educated, committed jihadists.

Afghanistain is a totally Muslim country.

The Buddist statues were idols to another religion.

They needed to be destroyed.

Taliban is nothing more than a bunch of thugs. They hate women and young girls. Their type of hatred and force needs to be eliminated.

The Taliban doesn't hate women and girls :cuckoo:

They just have their own culture and values.

Who are we to say they are wrong and need to change?

If the people of Egypt want to destroy the Pyramids or the British people want to blow up Stonehenge,

So what?

It's their country and they should be able to do what they want. :eusa_angel:

By the reports of throwing acid into the faces of girls going to school and all of the other reports of the tragic way they treatment women you are obviously full of dung sunni.

Their own cultures and values are a blight on the world.

The day they came into this country to destroy us they made it our business.

No Taliban has ever come to the United States and done anything :cuckoo:

Absolutely they did it by proxy of the Islamic terrorist.

When men proclaim a holy war via the use of force they are nothing more than criminals that should be shot on site. That site happens to be where Taliban had a foothold terrorizing the women and children and any who would attempt to protect them.

Who the fuck picks a fight with Buddhists, the most peaceful religion on Earth? Seriously, when was the last time you heard about a Buddhist military, or a Buddhist terrorist? Leave the poor Buddhists alone.
