For someone who quits everything she starts, Sarah Palin can't seem to let go of the one thing no one wants her to have: the limelight.
Monday marked three long years since the then-395-year-old presidential candidate, Senator John McCain, chose her to be his wholly unqualified running mate. She's rode the sassy librarian to right-wing pinup success ever since.
Palin was, at the time, governor of the extremely important state of Alaska (population: 12 people, all Palins or illegitimate Palin offspring). She was primarily a magnet for bad press during the campaign, but provided a social conservative vibrancy to the ticket, encouraging evangelicals and other religious right-wingers to vote for McCain/Palin.
Palin's place on the ticket did wonders for the McCain campaign, vaulting them to second place in a two-team race for President. McCain went back to the Senate to continue his work on behalf of the corporations of America. Palin went back to Alaska to work on her snowshoeing and whatever else Alaskan governors do.
After that loss to Obama/Biden in 2008, Palin immediately became one of the early front-runners for the 2012 Presidential campaign. She has been playing footsie with the idea of running ever since, going on lavish bus tours, selling her book, and pimping her daughter out to Dancing With the Stars.
Palin also began her now-common habit of quitting in the middle of whatever she's working on. In 2009, she resigned as governor of Alaska and announced she wouldn't run for re-election. The move was allegedly to save taxpayers money (she was facing millions in legal fees to defend herself against ethics charges), but was pretty clearly her attempt to avoid tricky political decisions while remaining a viable presidential candidate.
She is now one of the leading figures for Tea Party politics, and her indecision over running for president had, for months, held up Republican satisfaction with the choices. Many wanted her to run, citing her support for Tea Party principles. In typical Palin fashion, she has gone back and forth; one day, she's going to run, and on another, she's not.
I think it's pretty clear what's actually going on. Sarah Palin has no interest in doing the hard work involved with running for President. She simply doesn't want to put in the work to see anything through. At this point, it's a wonder she hasn't given up all her kids for adoption around 8 or 9 years old.
Palin does, however, want to spend as much time on TV and in the media as possible.
She's got a good thing going, and as long as there is buzz around her name, she's going to milk this puppy. That's why she won't say for sure whether or not she's running as long as she might, it keeps her somewhat relevant in her right-wing crazy circles.
You can see this unfolding today, as supporters and Tea Party officials go back and forth over whether or not Palin will even show up at an event scheduled for her this Saturday.
First she's going, and then she isn't. Now she might. Good lord, woman.
One of these days, Republicans will wise up, and one of the villainous Koch brothers will cut her a big enough check to just go back to Alaska or Arizona or wherever she's set up her brood, raise the kid she claimed as her own, and just leave the rest of America the hell alone.
As my dad used to say: Don't go away mad, Sarah. Just go away.
