Really? Since you have a vast knowledge of Army culture, when did they stop?

The Army generally tries to keep abbreviations down to three letters or less.

PVT, PFC, SPC/CPL, SGT, SSG, SFC, MSG, 1SG, CSM, 2LT, 1LT, CPT, MAJ, LTC, COL, BG, MG, LTG, GEN.

We are into the whole brevity thing.

Maybe you are right though. Maybe at one point convention was broken and we were doing things like the Marines and Air Force.
