Santorum's past gives GOP opponents ammunition

In 1996, after his wife, Karen, gave birth to a child who lived just two hours, the Santorums brought the dead baby Gabriel home to meet the other children, which Karen subsequently described in a book.

I would like to point out that playing with dead bodies is not a Catholic norm.

What games were they playing since you insist on lying about it.

Where in that statement does it say they "played" with the body?

Santorum's view is in line with Catholic beliefs that life begins at conception. So bringing a body home before a funeral isn't that unusual.

I think it's a bit weird, but as someone who was brought up Catholic, not really that odd for the devout.

But it does lend itself to "Dead Baby" jokes.

But heck..giving awards to child ass rapers doesn't seem all that kosher either. Protecting and hiding them from the law..yes..but awards? Come on!

Again, Sandusky was well regarded by most of the political establishment in PA. Both Dems and Republicans.

if this is the best you have, you guys are going to have a hard time.

Yes it is....a wake is usual. Bringing home a dead body for your kids to interact with is very unusual. Not to mention nutty as hell.

Many wakes are held in the home.

At what age would it be appropriate for children to interact with a dead sibling then?

I grew up catholic and thought it was all pretty weird. The constant changing of standing/sitting/kneeling during mass, eating gross crackers makes me holier, dipping my fingers in disgusting sitting water that 100 other hands had been in and putting it on my face made me holier, etc.

All those things including what Santorum did are weird, but not the least bit immoral or wrong.

I'm a non-demoninational Protestant - albeit a lazy one - but married into a Catholic family. My wife grew up in a strict Catholic household and no longer attends, so when my mother-in-law started coming to visit, I was the one who would take her to church. I was surprised at how ritualistic the Catholic Church was, with all the sitting and standing and chanting and repeating after the Priest, and so on.

Yeah, but they still don't play with dead babies.

Unusual to you. Actually, for most of history, that was normal. Funerals were held in homes.

It's only in the last century that you've developed this creepy as hell industry called the "Funeral Home", which is the last chance for the churches to gogue you on the way out.

But thanks for finally being honest enough to admit that the kids weren't "Playing" with the dead baby, they were only "interacting" with it.

Looking at it from his families point of view. Devout Catholics. The Unborn are people. Mommy's going to have a baby and something goes wrong. The baby dies, but they show the baby to the other kids so they know, "This is your brother and he's with God now."

Again, not a religious man, but I can occassionally sympathize with people who are. Nothing tests your faith more than when a loved one dies.
