Santorum is a 'Cafeteria Catholic'

Because he's an individual, and the Catholic Church encourages individuals to form opinions of their own. We're not like the Democrats. We think independently.

For all his wearing of his religion on his sweater vest, he sure does not tithe like one. He gave a WHOPPING 2.4% of his million dollar income to charity. It should be more like 10%.
That's because he's just another phony wingnut, fooling the ignorant masses on the Right.

So, Santorum (Google it!) is a staunch defender and follower of the Catholic Church, is he? Then why does he go against the church's position on capital punishment?

Same reason most Catholics do. Because they don't see a good reason to keep baby-murderers alive.

GALLUP POLL: Who Supports the Death Penalty? | Death Penalty Information Center

Protestants are somewhat more likely to endorse capital punishment than are Catholics and far more likely than those with no religious preference. More than 7 in 10 Protestants (71%) support the death penalty, while 66% of Catholics support it. Fifty-seven percent of those with no religious preference favor the death penalty for murder.

Now, if you want to be totally fair and point out that 75% of Catholics oppose the Church's position on Birth control, you should also- in the interest of fairness - point out that most of them disagree with the Church's position on Capital Punishment.

Why?

Frankly, giving money to religions is about the stupidest thing one can do.

It only encourages them.

I know ALL Christians will not agree with me. But some of us believe that the 10% you like to throw out there does NOT mean 10% of you income. If a person was very much in debt...maybe from his own doing, maybe because of medical bills. Whatever.....if he's a Christian, he'll still give his church as much as he possibly can. But, he may also volunteer his time at a homeless shelter, or he may throw change into a Salvation Army bucket, or he may find someone that he can encourage that is having a hard time. Whatever you can do to help someone else, no matter what it is, can be part of that Tithe. I don't believe the 10% tithe means CASH out of your pocket.

God is not going to punish someone that has gotten themselves in a tough situation, has asked for forgiveness and they do their best to help others. It's their obligation to pay their bills, God knows this....he is NOT going to hold it against someone that is trying to make their wrongs into rights.

We're not discussing the Catholic population at large. We are discussing Rick Santorum, who insists on using his Catholicism as an issue in the campaign, unlike Romney, who has yet to tout positions based on his Mormonism.

Bullshit! Individuality stops at the intersection of church teachings.

The Catholic Church does not let you pick and choose which of their tenets you wish to follow, i.e. Cafeteria Catholicism.

Tell that to Nancy PEElosi, and all the rest of the pro abortion 'catholics' on capital hill.
:eusa_whistle:
They aren't making an issue out of their religious beliefs, like Santorum, are they?

Im sorry, but the only ones making 'an issue' of it is the media.

He has to respond to their stupid questions, and you know it.

What would you be saying if he dismissed the questions?

There are fundamental doctrines that one does need to believe to call oneself a Catholic. Most of the bullshit that y'all are getting butthurt about do not qualify.

But, hey, don't let ignorance get in your way. You rant and lie and bullshit from now til doomsday.... won't make what you say true. But the truth was sacrificed long ago in US politics.

Not true. Catholics have no obligation to tithe at all. I don't know of many Catholics who don't but we tend not to judge people on how much they tithe.... So, no, it should not be 10%.

hes also voted yes on some pro choice issues, so instead of being a guy that votes for what he thinks his constituents wants instead of his conscience, hes labeled....see how that works? ;)

Yes - being against abortion and capital punishment are two of them.

Or am I wrong?

And that's fine - the issue isn't who is a good Catholic and who isn't. The issue is a candidate who is running on issues based on their religious views.

Like Santorum is doing, with contraceptives.

Romney doesn't do that because Mormonism is batshit crazy and it's not really what he wants to talk about.

Not that I think Santorum is about "Catholicism" as he is about "values".
