Santorum Endorsed Specter’s Presidential Bid (1996)

Santorum Endorsed Specter’s Presidential Bid - By Katrina Trinko - The Corner - National Review Online

And as for the pro-abortion-rights presidential candidate Santorum endorsed, when Specter launched a long-shot bid for president in 1995, Santorum — his fellow Pennsylvanian — was one of his few high-profile endorsements.

For Specter, who later became a Democrat, his pro-abortion-rights position was a centerpiece of his campaign. Specter believed that anti-abortion activists were a “fringe” group hijacking the Republican party.

“There are clearly more Republicans who are pro-choice,” Specter told Newsday’s Susan Page. “Up until now, I am the only person willing to take on the fringe.” After Specter dropped out of the race, he led an ill-fated movement to change the anti-abortion provision in the Republican party platform.

Santorum was effectively returning a favor by endorsing Specter despite his aggressive pro-abortion-rights views. Specter had supported Santorum’s 1994 Senate campaign.

This is a 16 year old issue. What does that have to do with anything? WHo cares? Are the Dems reduced to digging up kindergarten report cards on candidates to discredit them? Politics of personal destruction anyone?

It's your boy Romney out there bringing up his endorsement of Arlen Specter.

Which I think it the height of hypocrisy. The GOP got behind Arlen over Toomey in 2004 because at the time, it was thought Toomey was unelectable. And back then, he probably was. Toomey's a one-term Senator. So it was an understanding. Santorum would help Specter with conservatives, Specter would help Santorum with moderates.

And that's how Santorum should have put it.

Of course, Santorum has a problem in that he endorsed Romney in 2008.

    .

Well, I think it's good we have a new rule: We can't go back more than 16 years to come up with damaging information on a candidate.

    EITHER party, right?

    :gives:

A couple of PA guys backed each other up.

I don't see how this could possibly shine well or poorly on Rick.

Specter got himselfed dumped not long ago, and damn near no one backed him. hell the dems didn't put much effort into it.
