Santorum Bashes Public Schools, Says They're Stuck In Factory Era

What do you think would happen to the test scores if parents actually started getting involved in their kid's education again? I don't know how old YOU are but when I was a kid "open house" at the local school was a big deal and nearly every parent was there.

Well that sir, is the correct answer. You're absolutely right and that's the point I'm making. Money is not, never has been, and never will be the problem with why our public school system is in such a mess. If anything, it's overly funded, but all you ever hear from the status quo ignoramuses is that we need to throw more money at it.

The key is parents actually taking their role as being parents seriously.

Dont Taz Me Bro....Again, it's already the most expensive public education system in the world, and we have some of the worst results to show for it, so exactly how much more are we supposed to spend on it?

Well the lion's share sure as hell ain't going to the teachers. In Illinois, the highest paid teachers in the nation, the average starting wage for a teacher with a Bachelors Degree is a WHOPPING $37,500. In Wisconsin where everyone blamed the "greedy teachers" it's a WHOPPING $25,000.

Santorum Bashes Public Schools, Says They're Stuck In Factory Era

By Mitchell Landsberg February 18, 2012

Reporting from Columbus, Ohio— Republican GOP hopeful Rick Santorum may be the most prominent homeschooler in America. So it might not have been surprising that, on Saturday, he told a conservative Christian audience that he intended to homeschool his children in the White House.

In his remarks to the Ohio Christian Alliance, however, Santorum went further, seeming to attack the very idea of public education.

In the nation’s past, he said, “Most presidents homeschooled their children in the White House.… Parents educated their children because it was their responsibility.”

“Yes, the government can help,” he continued, “but the idea that the federal government should be running schools, frankly much less that the state government should be running schools, is anachronistic.”

He is so fucking right! Public schools force our children to learn agenda of the federal government, instead of learning how to think. Santorum is right!

Just from reading the title, we should be able to agree. SEE ALANTA FOR PROOF.

However that is not all public schools.

So it's the parents fault that class sizes are almost double what they should be, schools are closing down, teachers are being laid off and they don't get paid what they should in the first place? It's the parents fault that school after school has to cut sports and music programs? It's the parents fault that more schools have to cut their bus programs for rural kids? It's the parents fault that teachers have to purchase paper and pencils for their classes with their own money? This is all because schools get too much money?

Our entire county school board is Republican, our entire county state representative delegation is Republican, every state wide elected official in Georgia is Republican and they all, except the county school board, are at war against public education.
They have already started siphoning off public funds to go for "scholarships" to private schools, lobby for charter school funding when we are laying off teachers and slashing school budgets and calling for the school board members in this county to leave the Republican Party unless they support their state wide agenda.
All the school voucher "choice" argument has ever been is for those that can already afford to send their kids to private school to force govermment to pay for it and provide busing for them to get there.
I have graduated 3 from the public schools here, 2 national merit scholars, 2 in the AP program, one athlete with scholarship offers, one graduated college with honors after 3 years at age 20 and my last is at Georgia now in the honors program.
As a long time Republican I am outraged at the war on public edication they are waging nation wide in the name of "fixing" what IS WRONG with public education.
Get the hell out of our county and mind your own fucking business.

In 1970, in New York City, a newly minted teacher at a public school earned about $2,000 less in salary than a starting lawyer at a prominent law firm. These days the lawyer takes home, including bonus, $115,000 more than the teacher, the McKinsey study found.[...]

47 percent of America’s kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers come from the bottom one-third of their college classes [...]

Consider three other countries renowned for their educational performance: Singapore, South Korea and Finland. In each country, teachers are drawn from the top third of their cohort, are hugely respected and are paid well (although that’s less true in Finland). In South Korea and Singapore, teachers on average earn more than lawyers and engineers, the McKinsey study found.

Add in benefits and two months of vacation a year and that equates to not bad a salary. Benefits just for health and their retirement contribution add in another 12K a year Goose so you have a 50K to start there. Teachers here get paid 85K a year after 20 years and a Masters degree. They teach 4 classes a day out a 6 class period day. After 20 years they get that extra slot off. Move up to assistant principal at a high school with a Masters after 20 years and you get 105K a year. Starting salaries are low but starting salaries are low for every job. It is the top end teachers that are overpaid. And you can not get rid of the bad ones. Not even here in Georgia which is a right to work state.

No its your communities fault.

Why are you guys such cheap bastards?

Money never buys excellence. One fact is for sure in this country. There is NO CORRELATION between what teachers are paid and how well students perform.

The biggest problem with schools IS PARENTS.
Good parents elect competent school boards and live in communities that fund their own schools.
One parent household moocher communities where 100% of the kids receive a free lunch always have the worst schools.
Imagine that, WELL DUH!

One Los Angeles study found that having a teacher from the 25 percent most effective group of teachers for four years in a row would be enough to eliminate the black-white achievement gap.

Recent scholarship suggests that good teachers, even kindergarten teachers, increase their students’ earnings many years later. Eric A. Hanushek of Stanford University found that an excellent teacher (one a standard deviation better than average, or better than 84 percent of teachers) raises each student’s lifetime earnings by $20,000. If there are 20 students in the class, that is an extra $400,000 generated, compared with a teacher who is merely average.

Your link does not prove that paying teachers more makes public schools better.
The article says to "throw them 100K" without any facts whatsoever what that would do to educate the students.
You may want to pay teachers 65K a year as this article states TO START but when you add in benefit packages, retirement funding and the 10 weeks of paid vacation they get you advocate giving teachers 100K TO START.
Absurd. Paying a teacher WITH NO EXPERIENCE WHATSOEVER 100 thousand dollars a year to start.
Insane. The problem we have now is they want to throw $$$ at it and NOT ADDRESS THE REAL PROBLEM.
Parents are the problem. Kids can not learn because of the bad environment they are raised in and the disruptions in the class rooms.
How does paying teachers more stop the class room rowdy behavior from the moocher class kids?
Facts folks. I have raised 3 in the public schools and have coached over 1000 kids in rec league sports.
Parents and their lack of responsibility is the problem.

Paying retired teachers to not teach.

Excuse me, but is that supposed to be evidence of the success of the gubmint schooling monopoly?

Parents and their lack of responsibility is the problem.

The parents you describe are the exception to the rule so to put the burden of our public's school system on them is a stretch. In 1970 there was a $2,000 pay difference between what a lawyer makes and what a teacher made. Now the difference is over $100K.

You don't think that's significant? You don't think that matters? You REALLY want to put the entire burden on parents who BOTH now have to work to make ends meet?
