It's not unusual for a disgruntled candidate to run in a 3rd party slot. Perot got Bill Clinton elected. General MacArthur was dumped by republicans in the early 50's after a revolt by Veterans and he ran as a 3rd party candidate even though he knew he couldn't win but might siphon votes from a fellow General by the name of Eisenhower.
