"Sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice. We hear it everywhere in the speeches of politicians and the sermons of priests. The infamous greater good is always said to be in the minds of our leaders, never in our own heads, and if we follow these figures we are told we will find salvation."

- Altruism and Terrorism, Steven Handel, 5/31/10

I'm getting a little tired of being told it is noble to sacrifice for the 'greater good'.

gawd, this kid Steve (the author), is a total moron.

"Altruism is the fuel that motivates young and foolish men everywhere to fight wars and commit senseless acts of violence in the blind interests of dogmatic leaders"

Like most moronic dupes, he totally glosses over what altruism has given us: Memorial Day. Today we honor those who out of altruism kept us free to post our bullshit here without fear we will be arrested or committed.

then there is this disconnect:

altruismposter.png

a military academy ad asking for altruists to join a cause for the greater good, on the libertarian page

The most well-known opponent of altruism is philosopher and novelist Ayn Rand:

“It only stands to reason that where there’s sacrifice, there’s someone collecting the sacrificial offerings. Where there’s service, there is someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice is speaking of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master.”

Alterism is a kind of charity but charity is an act of choice and not a national endeavor. Most people on the left sell their version of this as some kind of noble endeavor were individuals obtain redemption for their sins. Its one thing to die for a nations causes but its quite another to believe that serving your nation guarantees your passage into heaven. That is between you and your religion which has nothing to do with the actions of your government.

altruism is neither liberalism or conservatism. It is it's own ism.

the author was knocking altruism and quoting Rand.

The author happens to be correct. In the 19th century people served their country in wars for causes they believed in and that cause's goal was the reward. The patriots of 1776 fought for a cause to liberate their country from British rule and that goal in itself was the only reward.

Unfortunately the progressive movement in this country turned serving a nations causes into a holy crusade for personal redemption and now serving our country in a time of war has became its own spiritual reward.

Its the reason why serving your country in any aspect such as serving in the peace core receives 'bonus honor' that doing the same thing in a non-government way doesn't get.

Cherry picking facts that are correct is what you are talking about. The authors main points about the evils of altruism are totally outweighed by the facts not cherry picked.

We would not be free if it were not for altruism.

I think telling people that the only way that they can be just and good in this world is to serve the interest of the state and the national community seems a little inhibiting to someone's freedom. They feel compelled to give up any personal ambitions over their own lives in order to serve the 'greater good'. Giving up all personal liberty in exchange for redemption is a deal to tempting for most human beings since we utlimately fear spending eternity in hell so what is the big deal about giving up a few personal wants in our lives in order to garantee our passage into heaven. At this point, people will become willing subjects of the government simply because they believe they can obtain holiness in that service.

Obama can now sell indulgences to let the wealthy buy their way into heaven? Thats probably the next step in the evolution of the democratic party. Republicans/conservatives/tea-baggers are demons destined for hell.

Your attempts to blend Church and State aren't workable. Leftists need to get a grip on the concept of nationalism and patriotism. They are not evil concepts. If you really think about this concept on Memorial Day and see that guys like Hitler and Stalin are still around, you may just get an inkling about what happens when you volunteer to defend your country and your freedoms.

You said that alturism is an act where one participates in the nation such as saying that without alterism no one would have sacrificed their lives in our nation's war. I hate to tell you something but that kind of charity also exist in the private acts we do for others yet, to the left, it only seems to count when we participate in the national will. Its the reason why private charity gets no 'bonus honor' with the left and only seems to count when it is done participating in the nation.

The greatest sacrifice in mankind is that of a parent who gives up greedy personal wants for the purpose of providing a better future for their children. Paying for better schools, buying tutorial aids, educational endeavors, parenting classes, saving for their kid's college, paying higher rent in a better part of town with less bad influences. May mean no eating expensive dinners, no new car, no rims, no new clothes, no jewelry, no flat-screen TV, no lavish vacations...........may mean a really dull or modest adult life.....but to set one's child up to live better than oneself is the greatest sacrifice in mankind.

FAR FAR TOO FEW parents are willing to make that sacrifice in this age. Hence the problems we have.

I actually agree that self-sacrifice is noble in itself but it is still a choice one makes over their own life. We don't have the right to make that choice for others. My complaint about sacrifice is that their seems to be a thinking that doing it for the nation brings someone into nirvana or a state of heaven. A kind of moral redemption for that person and society.

The thread is about altruism. The thread's OP author quoted Ayn Rand. He also made his point perfectly clear in case some bozo like you was incapable of comprehension: "I'm getting a little tired of being told it is noble to sacrifice for the 'greater good'.

now what is it about the above that has you stuck on stupid and 'leftists'?

Your complain is in your own head and like we witnessed earlier, you argued with yourself on this point of yours, and you lost -- to yourself. :clap2:

You are 100% right. The reason it is so noble is it is VOLUNTARY. In America, we aren't forced to be good parents. Or charitable. It's voluntary. As part of our freedom, we also have the right to be shitty parents and greedy. Noble people vote in favor of that freedom, while practicing the acts of nobility.

Government confiscating property to be distributed in an attempt to guarantee that "better future" for kids is tyranny. The problem liberals have is they need that feeling of redemption by doing it through the government. Why? Because they are like children. If they are being noble and doing the right sacrifices, and see their neighbor not doing the same thing, they want someone to force that neighbor to also be miserable and live a more modest life.

A truly balanced person feels great pride in sacrificing for their children, voluntarily, because they love their children. Not because they want a special thank you card from a politician that makes them feel warm and fuzzy.

But voluntary sacrifice is indeed the key phrase. Forced sacrifice isn't sacrifice, as there is no choice. "Forced sacrifice" is simple tyranny.

I'm stuck on stupid because I don't want to pass you. If I upshifted a little to retard it would blow by you. Its for your own good.
