S. Korean defense minister to visit Indonesia for talks

South Korean defense minister Kim Kwan-jin will visit Indonesia this week to discuss defense cooperation and regional security issues, the defense ministry here said Tuesday.

During the three-day trip starting Wednesday, Kim will meet with Indonesian Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro for talks over expanding their defense ties and sign an agreement to form a committee overseeing bilateral defense industrial cooperation, the ministry said in a statement.

The tour can lead also to discussions over choosing Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, South Korea's major shipbuilder, as a preferred bidder for Indonesia's submarine acquisition project worth 1 billion U.S. dollars, according to local reports.

Representatives from nine South Korean companies including Daewoo will reportedly accompany Kim on the trip.

The submarine tender for Indonesia in which S.Korea is competing runs against German-Turkish bid.
French and Russian offers were already disqualified.
If German-Turkish bid will win in tender, 1-2 submarines of Turkish Navy will be leased to Indonesia until the new submarines have been built.
