Ryan Bill Dies in the Senate

Which Democratic pet projects were passed by Bush?
Medicare D, for starters.....They had been mewling about that one for years and Shrubbie stole the issue right out from under them.

So the name Billy Tauzin doesn't ring a bell? He basically ramrodded the bill through Congress,,,,then took a job as president of with Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, a huge lobbying group for the pharma industry. You know the plan, that ensures no bargaining on the prices with the pharma industry? That's the bill that was adopted.
Do you actually think the business-hating-socialist Dems would give corporate welfare
to the pharma industry?
Nope, their plan didn't include that provision.
But how can we forget that Obama sold out and decided to keep that policy because of the pharma industry's support for Obama care?
Of course they would...The dems are as big a bunch of corporate tools as are the repubs.

Wake up.

Bill to Let Medicare Negotiate Drug Prices Is Blocked

WASHINGTON, April 18 — A pillar of the Democratic political program tumbled today when Republicans in the Senate blocked a proposal to allow Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices for millions of older Americans, a practice now forbidden by law.

Democrats could not muster the 60 votes needed to take up the legislation in the face of staunch opposition from Republicans, who said that private insurers and their agents, known as pharmacy benefit managers, were already negotiating large discounts for Medicare beneficiaries.
<snip>
“The Department of Veterans Affairs is able to negotiate for lower-priced drugs,” said the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada. “H.M.O.’s can negotiate. Wal-Mart can negotiate. Why in the world shouldn’t Medicare be able to do that?”
<snip>
The House passed a bill requiring the Secretary of Health and Human Services to negotiate drug prices by a vote of 255 to 170 on Jan. 12, just eight days after the new Congress convened. The Senate bill would permit but not require such negotiations.

President Bush had threatened to veto either or both versions of the legislation.

====================
Medicare Part D as written, is corporate welfare and as the government pays more for the pharmaceuticals than they have to, it adds more to the debt.
Exactly what was the point of making it against the law for the government not to be able to negotiate pricing? Every other government in the world negotiates the pricing they will pay and the drugs are much, much cheaper in every other country in the world.
This deal has always pissed me off.

the article was from '07.
Anyway, the bill sucked. The gov't has near monopsony power so "negotiation" is the wrong word.

So what?

They shouldn't be meddling at all...Just because you don't like the color of the turd polish is irrelevant.

BTW, "every other country in the world" subsidizes the hell out of just about everything, so pointing to prices held down by such means is entirely meaningless.

Just because they do subsidize, has nothing to do with the fact they control the price they are paying. It also doesn't explain why drugs in the US are double of what other countries are paying. Surely the pharma industry is profiting in their deals with other countries. With the US, they know they can stick it to Americans. The cost of drugs in the US, is one of the main reasons that health care costs are so high in the US and why health care insurance rates increases three-four times the rate of inflation.

On another note, nice Avatar. It's a good tribute to a great baseball player and a quality human being.

No, actually they are not The U.S. must subsidize drug development for other countries precisely because they underpay for their products. We could also underpay but the downside is there is no incentive to develop new drugs anymore. I happily pay more.

Do you have the vaguest idea what you're babbling about?

The pharm companies profit in other countries because their industry is heavily subsidized by the taxpayers...The "lower prices" they pay are a mirage.

One of the biggest reasons that 'scrip prices are so high in America is the horribly convoluted FDA approval process, which costs over $500 million just to get a new medication to market...Who the hell you think pays for that mess?

Of course Ryans plan didn't make it through the Senate. No one expected it would.

I'm very interested to see the Dem plan to save Medicare.

Oh wait. I forgot. Thats an entitlement.

Never mind.
Yes, an entitlement that every working person pays into.
And yet the system is going bankrupt at an alarming rate. Des that not tell you there is a problem and it needs fixing NOW. We can’t wait.
fyi
his 8 fiscal years added $6.3 TRILLION to our total debt, not $5.0....let alone the debt his programs passed like the pill bill are adding to the present debt.

From 2001-2007 the debt went from 5.7 to 8.4, from 2007-2010 it went from 8.4 to 13.5.

Bush in 6 years before democrats had a legislative majority managed to rack up 2.7 trillion dollars in debt.

Bush and Obama under a democrat legislative majority managed to rack up 6.1 trillion in debt..

United States public debt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Remember who authorizes spending - congress.

sorry! bush served 8 years....you don't get to use 6 years just for your partisan pleasure nick!

clinton served 8 years, and those 8 years were his as well....

baffling with bull crud, just don't fly.

obama's stimulus in bush's last fiscal year added 100 billion of the 1.4 billion deficit....whoopdeedo!

president bush added at least 100 billion to president clinton's last fiscal year....

it is, what it is.
Except that congress is a vital part of that equation and you conveniently left them out entirely. Why do the liberals get a complete pass when Bush was in power. You sure as hell don’t give the current congress a pass Because Obama is in power.
we in effect subsidize lower prices outside the US...

Absolutely. Big Pharma gouges America to make up for their loss profit margins on the world stage.
And you fail to see the problem when you remove that profit incentive! Are you even thinking about the issue?
