Russia's Armata tank falls victim to harsh economic reality

... and the joke of the Armata gets even funnier. From 2,300 tanks by 2020, to 330 tanks by 2020, to 100. Honestly I'd be surprised if they build those 100.

More than three years after Russia’s T-14 Armata tank made its widely touted and much scrutinized public debut, the country has made it clear it has no plans at present to buy more than 100 of them. The design’s ballooning cost has forced the Kremlin to focus its efforts on upgrading its T-72, T-80, and T-90 tanks, instead.

As an added bonus they are using the same line they did when announced canceling production of SU-57:

“We can … boost the series production [of the T-14] when needed and stay ahead of our colleagues, so to speak,” Deputy Prime Minister Borisov had claimed in 2017. He also described this as a "trump card" Russia could play at any time.

They sound like our very own Pentagon now.

USA has indeed had a couple of similar flubs, where there was long expensive development cycle but acquisition far under projections.

Sea Wolf - Great submarine but only 3 built. Due to relatively lower numbers for active attack submarines they probably do make an actual difference in current military deployment and any future conflict, unlike a dozen SU-57s or a handful of advanced tanks.

B-2 - Again, built far under their projected numbers but enough to make up a solid portion of US bomber fleet played important roles in conflicts in Iraq and the Balkans. If the US wanted to hit North Korea's nuclear facilities tomorrow it would likely be with B-2s.

Zumwalt - Huge fail since only building three and they never even got the weapon system they were designed around. Will remain an insanely expensive floating missile truck, but does how the power generation capabilities to be a platform for future weapons.

LCS - Doesn't really fit since sounds they are going forward with acquisition, albeit greatly modified from initial specs. They first batch will be of much more limited utility, I think last I read they will be training ships and/or overpriced minesweepers. Later ones will have more blue water combat capabilities and might actually be useful in a CAG as an anti-submarine escort.
