MOSCOW — Russia is considering buying an unspecified number of remotely piloted reconnaissance aircraft from Israel, the head of the Russian military said Tuesday, in what may be an attempt by the Kremlin to strengthen its intelligence-gathering capacity after the August war with Georgia.

A Russian purchase of such aircraft from Israel would be a significant expansion of military business between the countries.

“We are working on this issue,” Gen. Nikolai Makarov, the chief of the Russian General Staff, told the Interfax news agency. “We are talking about a test batch of Israeli drone planes."

In recent months, the Russian Defense Ministry has unveiled changes aimed at streamlining the armed forces. The changes include thinning the officer corps, improving training and living standards for troops, and buying modern weapons systems.

Talk of the purchase was probably prompted by intelligence-gathering failures by the Russian military during the war with Georgia, a country that already has Israeli-made spy aircraft, said Aleksandr Golts, an independent Russian military analyst. “The war in Georgia showed us that we are frightfully lagging behind in terms of technical reconnaissance,” he said. “There were many failures of intelligence.”

Russia has been unable to develop its own remotely piloted spy plane, though it had clear military dominance in the conflict, which lasted five days.

The negotiations on the spy planes are taking place against a backdrop of strong Israeli objections to a possible sale by Moscow of advanced antiaircraft systems to Iran and Syria, two vocal adversaries of Israel.

There go the millions of money that went in technology research paid by our taxpayers, they could as well sell it to the Chinese too. This way the 2 biggest National security threats to the West get a more advanced army to oppress their own civilians and naburing countries (which sometimes are allies of us). What s the point of advancing your military if you give away the advancement to your worst possible enemies (the 2 nations that have the biggest chance of becoming an enemy of the west are China and Russia because of ideologic reasons).

You're disappointed Israel didn't put US interests above its own? Are we having an imperialist day?

First, you have no idea if the US contributed anything to the development of these surveillance drones.

Second, there is no possibility the US will go to war with either Russia or China.

Third, are you sure selling those drones to Russia does not serve US interests? While it is far fetched to imagine the US will go to war with either Russia or China, it is not so far fetched to imagine the US may go to war with Iran. Israel has connected the sale of the drones to Russia not selling its S-300 anti aircraft system to Iran, and in the event of an Israeli or US war with Iran, that will save lives, Israeli or American.

With respect to Russia and the ME, Israeli and US strategic interests are in line with each other, but with respect to China, they diverge because US interests are focused on China's influence on areas bordering the Pacific and Israel's interests are about potential Chinese support for Israel's enemies.

Yes because the Arabs only deal in oil, which cripples economies, causes global warming, pollutes the air and well fucks everyone.

Yep made by Arabs is a great brand!

Now go stick your head straight in your ass!

If you deal with Israel, you are dealing with the devil.

You will lose in the end

Chances are very high that this technology is US made, you don't want it to end up in the hand of Russia so it can attack a US ally (remember Georgia? possibility of Ukraine?). The Russians and the Chinese are the 2 biggest threats on this planet to the Western countries, if they change behavior then you d better be watch their steps. Both countries are in an ideological battle with the West, Russia is an authoritarian state and so is China. The difference with the Chinese is that they are much more dependent on the US (majority of the state income) and act differently because of that reason (but this behavior can and will change once they are no more so dependent on the US). And russia hasn't changed much, the moment they finally got a bit of money and recovered from their bad economic state of the collapsed SU they used it to wage war against Georgia to remove US influence and try to re-establish Russian influence in that region.

There is no basis for assuming the technology is US made, and there is no reasonable scenario in which the US will go to war with Russia, and if Russia should go to war with any of the countries formerly under its control, it will crush them with or without the surveillance drones Israel will sell them. In fact, these are the same drones Israel had previously sold to Georgia, and Russia had been so impressed with them during its war with Georgia that after raging at and threatening Israel for selling the drones to Georgia, Russia then asked if it could buy them.

Since entering into negotiations with Israel to buy these drones, Russia has dropped negotiations with Iran and Syria to sell Iran its S-300 anti aircraft system, reportedly the most advanced in the world, as well plans to sell Syria other advanced systems. While the drones will not tip the balance of power anywhere, these Russian systems would have tipped the balance of power in the ME, making Israeli losses in any war with Syria or Iran much higher, as well as American losses if we should have to attack Iran.
