  • Russia has just one tank factory, which can produce around 20 new tanks every month.
  • Demand for tanks is now outstripping production by a factor of ten, according to The Economist.
  • Russia is losing around 150 tanks a month in Ukraine, and is becoming reliant on refurbished vehicles.
In the 1940s the Soviet Union was able to produce 1,000 tanks a month. Today, Russia can produce just 20, with a single factory struggling to keep pace with outsized demand caused by the war in Ukraine, according to The Economist.

The British publication reported that Russia now has just one tank factory, UralVagonZavod, a massive 1930s-built industrial complex in eastern Russia.

It may be one of the largest tank manufacturers in the world, with Fortune estimating that it has 30,000 employees, but each month it is only able to produce tanks in the double digits, The Economist said, citing liberal Russian media outlet Novaya Gazeta.

That's nowhere near demand: one Western official told the publication that demand is outstripping supply by a factor of 10.

Russia is losing around 150 tanks a month in Ukraine, according to an analysis by open source intelligence platform Oryx. It has lost 1,779 tanks since February 2022, Oryx reported.

tic toc When will the Ukrainians destroy the last Russian tank?

Great article in the Weekend WSJ on the changing nature of warfare, not least of which are drones. "Everybody can have their own Air Force now", according to a CSIS analyst cited in the article. Cheap drones are destroying artillery and vehicles that cost many many times more than the drones.

Morale matters a lot as well. Ukranians are far outnumbered by Russian forces, but have driven them out of many places. See a map of advances in Feb.1922 compared to a recent map of this month's 'front lines'.

Regardless of there being any truth in the propaganda, there's no doubt that Russia will be pressed to compete.
When the situation begins to influence Russia's ability to succeed is when China will take part in the war.

China has always understood that this is America's last chance at bat.

The proxy war in the Ukraine is for all the marbles this time.

Utter garbage but so unbelievably amateur that you would need to be very gullible and low IQ to treat it seriously.
The source is absurd but pretending for a moment to be very stupid , I wonder how Russia has managed to smash two separate US and Ukey armies so far -- each starting with around a force of 200 000 ?
How amazing to achieve it with no tanks and presumably few guns and a shortage of ammunition .
Perhaps dear Uncle P has demonic support , despite his dementia , Parkinsons and cancer . Such a brave and lucky little chap .

Actually it's about Russia maintaining the dominant provider of natural gas in Europe. Same as the Syrian civil war was.
It is genuinely also about clearing out the US Nazi infestation of Khazaria with a bonus of a few trillion once the victors reap the reward of the natural resources reserves . Much much more than Gas .

You know so much about Russia I'm surprised you aren't appointed Russia's minister of defense.

It's all about the natural gas.

"Can" produce 20 tanks a month and actually doing it in Russia are two different things.

You are sounding more and more desperate every day.

Why would China want to rescue Russia? China's economy is heavily dependent of trade with the US and EU and Russia is nothing to China but a source of gas and oil, so why would China want to put its whole economy at risk to save Russia?

The new T-62M obr. 2022. (This is not a joke).

BTW, this same 50 year-old thermal sight is now being used on T-72's and T-80's, since the Sosna-U relies on French components...
