Rupert's American Power in danger?

Maybe it will be a chance to inform the vast majority of Americans that Fox tried to force reporters to lie and then won the court case against them by proving to a right wing judge that News stations dont have to tell the truth in America

And you do realize that it was not Fox News, right? It was New World Communications of Tampa, Inc, a subsidiary of Fox Television, but you knew that because for you, truth matters...

Any rational and unbiased look at the case, the facts, and the ruling should lead a person to the conclusion that there was no legal decision that allows Fox News to lie. But you did that because for you, truth matters...

If you would like to read what I think is a good, unbiased look at the case and the ensuing accusations that Fox won the right to lie, here's the link:

Newsvine - So, Apparently the Claims that Fox Won the Right to Lie in Court aren't Truthful.

It's pretty short so you should be able to handle it...

Oh! These are the five news organizations who filed briefs in support New world Communications:

Belo Corporation

Cox Television, Inc.

Gannett Co., Inc.

Media General Operations, Inc.

Post-Newsweek Stations, Inc.

Let's remember that old Rupert is an American citizen as well....and if he's found guilty in the UK of any of the charges being brought up, that can well put the kibosh on his ownings and power in the USA

Its no longer a secret that Murdoch owns and controls all the lamestream news since even THEY admitted it on CBS last night that he does own them and has 42 BILLION dollars.

He's in big trouble in this country. There are laws against bribing officials in other countries. And he had a lawsuit from a rival news outfit that said they hacked into their computers. It was settled out of court.

The FBI is also seriously investigating allegiations that NewsCorp hacked into the cell phones of 9/11 victims.

Shocking! The news organization blackballed and attacked by the Obama Administraation is being attacked by the Obama Administration.

Who could have possibly predicted this sort of thing would happen?

Are you saying that Murdoch owns CBS? I don't think so, but if you can give me the facts that show otherwise, I'll stand corrected.

No one like to shine the light on Fox more than me but I really don't believe he is guilty.

Murdoch has a pride ridden history of calling up his various ownings to change headlines or shift stories....so for him to suddenly claim ignorance regarding a practice that his right hand perjured/contradicted herself to Parliament about is looking dubious at best.

Likely the biggest ramifications of all this here in America will be the number of Murdoch threads started here and in countless other internet forums.

No, the biggest ramification here is that if Murdoch is found guilty, and a similar charge is laid here, he can lose his mini-media monopoly in New York City.....which would severely cripple the neocon noise machine for upcoming elections.

Libs love a Free Press just as long as they only report what the Democrat tells them to report

Free Press is not a guarantee to peddle influence, run bribery or monopolize the news medium, Frankie Boy. But then again, clowns like you are fascist minded anyway, so Murdoch is your boy.

It would be nice to see the left give a shit about George Soros as much as they do Murdock and Fox news.

Gee Steph, I didn't know that Soros was an international media magnate that is a living testament to the violation of our anti-trust laws by owning a two newspapers, a TV and radio broadcast station in one state?

When you can PROVE that Soros has EXACTLY the same set of circumstances and history that has brought Murdoch to his current dilemas, then you can bray the usual neocon mantras. If not, just stop acting like a neocon ass and STFU, Stephanie.

News Corp.

On May 2, 2007, News Corp. made an unsolicited takeover bid for Dow Jones, offering US$60 a share for stock that had been selling for US$33 a share. The Bancroft family, which controlled more than 60% of the voting stock, at first rejected the offer, but later reconsidered its position.[21]

Three months later, on August 1, 2007, News Corp. and Dow Jones entered into a definitive merger agreement.[22] The US$5 billion sale added The Wall Street Journal to Rupert Murdoch's news empire, which already included Fox News Channel, financial network unit and London's The Times, and locally within New York, the New York Post, along with Fox flagship station WNYW (Channel 5) and MyNetworkTV flagship WWOR (Channel 9).[23]

On December 13, 2007, shareholders representing more than 60 percent of Dow Jones's voting stock approved the company's acquisition by News Corp.[24]

In an editorial page column, publisher L. Gordon Crovitz said the Bancrofts and News Corp. had agreed that the Journal's news and opinion sections would preserve their editorial independence from their new corporate parent:[25]

“

Mr. Murdoch told the Bancrofts that 'any interference – or even hint of interference – would break the trust that exists between the paper and its readers, something I am unwilling to countenance.' ... Mr. Murdoch and the Bancrofts agreed on standards modeled on the longstanding Dow Jones Code of Conduct.

”

A special committee was established to oversee The Journal's editorial integrity. When the managing editor Marcus Brauchli resigned on April 22, 2008, the committee claimed the resignation was under pressure, and that News Corporation had violated its agreement by not notifying the committee earlier.[26] Brauchli said that he thought it was reasonable that new owners would appoint their own editor.

A June 5 Journal news story quoted charges that Murdoch had made and broken similar promises in the past. One large shareholder commented that Murdoch has long "expressed his personal, political and business biases through his newspapers and television stations." Journalist Fred Emery, formerly of the British newspaper The Times, recounted an incident when Murdoch was reminded of his own earlier promises not to fire The Times' editors without independent directors' approval and allegedly responded, "God, you don't take all that seriously, do you?"[

I know you're not the brightest person here, but didn't you realize I knew Murdoch owned the WSJ when I responded to Sallow's "yellow journalism" silliness?

Nice try, bunky....but the fact of the matter is:

In February 2003, a Florida Court of Appeals unanimously agreed with an assertion by FOX News that there is no rule against distorting or falsifying the news in the United States.

Back in December of 1996, Jane Akre and her husband, Steve Wilson, were hired by FOX as a part of the Fox “Investigators” team at WTVT in Tampa Bay, Florida. In 1997 the team began work on a story about bovine growth hormone (BGH), a controversial substance manufactured by Monsanto Corporation. The couple produced a four-part series revealing that there were many health risks related to BGH and that Florida supermarket chains did little to avoid selling milk from cows treated with the hormone, despite assuring customers otherwise.

According to Akre and Wilson, the station was initially very excited about the series. But within a week, Fox executives and their attorneys wanted the reporters to use statements from Monsanto representatives that the reporters knew were false and to make other revisions to the story that were in direct conflict with the facts. Fox editors then tried to force Akre and Wilson to continue to produce the distorted story. When they refused and threatened to report Fox’s actions to the FCC, they were both fired.(Project Censored #12 1997)

Akre and Wilson sued the Fox station and on August 18, 2000, a Florida jury unanimously decided that Akre was wrongfully fired by Fox Television when she refused to broadcast (in the jury’s words) “a false, distorted or slanted story” about the widespread use of BGH in dairy cows. They further maintained that she deserved protection under Florida’s whistle blower law. Akre was awarded a $425,000 settlement. Inexplicably, however, the court decided that Steve Wilson, her partner in the case, was ruled not wronged by the same actions taken by FOX.

FOX appealed the case, and on February 14, 2003 the Florida Second District Court of Appeals unanimously overturned the settlement awarded to Akre. The Court held that Akre’s threat to report the station’s actions to the FCC did not deserve protection under Florida’s whistle blower statute, because Florida’s whistle blower law states that an employer must violate an adopted “law, rule, or regulation.” In a stunningly narrow interpretation of FCC rules, the Florida Appeals court claimed that the FCC policy against falsification of the news does not rise to the level of a “law, rule, or regulation,” it was simply a “policy.” Therefore, it is up to the station whether or not it wants to report honestly.

During their appeal, FOX asserted that there are no written rules against distorting news in the media. They argued that, under the First Amendment, broadcasters have the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on public airwaves. Fox attorneys did not dispute Akre’s claim that they pressured her to broadcast a false story, they simply maintained that it was their right to do so. After the appeal verdict WTVT general manager Bob Linger commented, “It’s vindication for WTVT, and we’re very pleased… It’s the case we’ve been making for two years. She never had a legal claim.”

Recently saw this guy reponding to questions on TV.

Creepy mofo.

He plans on throwing his subordinates under the bus.

His point, and it may be valid, is that he trusted some top managment and they broke the law.

But you know, if there's a consistent pattern of such behavior (briobing official and phone tapping and hacking) then it really ought not to matter whether he knew about it.

Mafia Dons don't know the specifics of their underlings actions, but they can still be held responsible for what their organization does.

This looks like it might be a case for RICO.

He's bloody lucky Congress is embattled with debt talks. Otherwise they'd be focusing on him, and hopefully calling for his head.

Yes. It's a conspiracy by the Democrats to close down Fox News. They made News Corp hack all those phones and bribe all those Metropolitan police officers.

Traditionally, we wait for a conviction.... or even a trial.... or at least an arrest.... before we hang people in the US.
