Is there a downside to this?

Yes, it would be ineffective at best. The Iranians continue to move their nuclear programs underground in anticipation of just such an attack. The politicians and Imams in control do not have a problem with letting their country burn, evidenced by the words of the Ayatollah Khomeini, "We do not worship Iran, we worship Allah. For patriotism is another name for paganism. I say let this land burn. I say let this land go up in smoke, provided Islam emerges triumphant in the rest of the world." There is no reason to think that his disciple, President Ahmadinejad feels any differently.

The best way to deal with Iran is to continue propping up and funding the dissidents within the Iranian population, bombing the country could quite possibly turn those dissidents against us (think Afghanistan circa 1980s) . Of course, by doing that we are in violation of the Algiers Accords, but hey, different times these.

Now, if Iran attacks the U.S. or any of our allies, that's a different story.

The Left thinks that the War on Terror should be handled by the police, and that there is no war on the radical Islamic enemy that should be conducted by the military. How much time after the defeat in Iraq is secured will it take for the Left to call for the NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan? How much time will it take Al Qaeda and other extremists to switch from the American defeat in Iraq to battling NATO forces in Afghanistan? The Left thinks we should negotiate with Iran, the country that is killing our people in Iraq and developing nuclear weapons. Rudi is on the right side of these questions: he recognizes there is a war on a radical Islamic enemy that will engage our military overseas. He recognizes Iran as an enemy that must be stopped from acquiring nuclear weapons through, if necessary, the use of military force.
