I am challenging the oft repeated argument that only border states or counties can speak with any authority about the illegal immigrant and drug smuggling problem.

The Sonora desert is known as a "sub tropical desert" (LOOK IT UP) because of the high rain fall. Look it up. The whole area is criss-crossed with dirt roads and small aircraft can land and take off a very few minutes later. Money and drugs change hands and the plane is gone. No airstrip is necessary but there are actually a few where planes land and take off unmolested. I lived southwest of Tucson for more than 25 years and saw it happen. When I called sheriff or Border Patrol, I was told it was impossible for them to get there fast enough to catch the plane before it took off.

I suspect that even rw's are well aware that this is common.

As for cars, the roads are patrolled by Border Patrol. It is illegal to give rides to illegals and since President Obama increased those patrols, it is increasingly difficult for smugglers to give rides to illegals. And, why would they want to? Its the drugs they want - not the people.

Some years ago, what was known as "another of McCain's follies" was night vision helicopters. They were able to watch illegals walk across the floor of the desert but that doesn't mean they could catch them. The local news would show footage of coyotes (the animals) trotting along in that eerie green light of night vision cameras but that was all they could do - watch.

Anther of McCain's harebrained schemes was chairs mounted high up on stakes. the Border Patrol officer would climb to the top and be able to sit in the chair and see for miles. Only problem was that the desert growth is so thick, they couldn't see anything farther away than just a few feet.

The infamous wall is a bust because they just build better and better tunnels or they climb over. There are places where the border is marked with nothing more than a red post in the ground. If you wanted to, you could hide a herd of elephants in that desert.

If Santorum won Arizona on top of winning Michigan, that would be the end of Romney.

But Santorum isn't dedicating resources to Arizona because

1) His resources are limited.
2) No one really pays much attention to the Arizona Primary
3) There are so many Mormons in Arizona that Romney has a built in advantage
4) It's "Winner take all", so losing even by one vote means you lose everything.

Winning Michigan would be the more decisive victory for Santorum, because it's Romney's "Home State" (besides Utah, California, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, that is.)

I live in the Phoenix metro area, the valley, and I don't like Sheriff Babeu's stance of illegal immigration or his falsehoods about the extent of drug smuggling through his county. But I was impressed at the way he handled his "outing" at today's press conference. He is running for Congress and his republican primary mates are attacking him with fervor, as of today. Babeu was the run away front runner, but his money people are leaving already. He was slated to be a future governor of Arizona.

Man, I lived in Maricopa, and if you think he was exaggerating the amount of drug smuggling through that area you've got your head in the sand. People in Hidden Valley were seeing mule trains (groups of 10 or more illegals each toting 50-70 pound packs of drugs) a couple times a week. Just south of Maricopa where I-8 runs there were signs warning people of the drug traffickers and illegals moving through the area.
