Romney Wont Release His Tax Returns?

Has Romney even held a job or political office in the last five years?

We may be seeing the wave of the future. First Mr. Obama is elected after basically having a cup of coffee in the Congress....and now the GOP is apparently going to nominate Mr. Romney who is basically, as you said, one of the idle rich the GOP policies have created.

If you haven't gotten any battle scars, I guess you look more appealing to the voting public.

As always, we get the government we deserve, style over substance rules the day. Which is why I don't think the election will be a cakewalk for either party. We now field, on both sides of the aisle, candidates who are so risk adverse that you get the canned speech, the canned responses, the "debates" where it is merely a regurgitation of long winded talking points.

In the incubator the American public has created where we can be swayed by media on either side of the debate, I can't blame the candidates for playing their cards so close to the vest. To risk anything is to risk everything because whether it's Newt's affairs or Hillary's likability/femininity the public gets a taste for the imperfection and the media continues to feed it. It is called "the news cycle". And given the herd mentality of the news networks, if CNN is covering it, so will Fox, so will MSNBC, so will ABC, CBS, NBC. Talk radio will talk about it. Don't blame them...if as many people hated Oprah as claim they hate her, you wouldn't see her ever again. Someone likes her. You like Vanilla Ice? Someone does (or did). He sold something like 11 million copies of his record. Please don't sit there and say that the media feeds us, we tell the media what we want. And they give it to us.

This isn't the thread but I continue to advance the notion of making it much, much harder to become President to where the Constitution first ensures debates (6 of them--1 on foreign policy, one of domestic policy, one on national security, then 3 wild card topics to be determined) and then the format for the debates: 90 minutes of moderated debate to set the topics in each category, a break of some length, then 90 minutes of the candidates questioning each other directly on the same evening to pry these people away from their talking points. Every 4 years covering each Tuesday from roughly September 15 through election day.

The political animals who run on the plain Presidential politics are not the ones who are responsible for vetting themselves; we are. Romney's tax returns and his hesitancy to release them are not the problem, they are symptomatic of a much larger syndrome...the "lets see if I can get away with it" syndrome.

All too often, the American public's response to that syndrome is "yes".

We get the government we deserve. Always have, always will.

Good post, candycorn. We get what we deserve. We should demand those tax records and demand closing of tax loop holes. We have to pay attention. Are negative ads what we want? Do they vet the candidates or go for "gotcha topics?" We have to be looking at things closely...especially at what is happening around us today with our present leaders.

Well, if the negative attacks didn't work, the candidates wouldn't be airing them.

So tell me do you require the tax returns and medical records from all your state, local and other representatives?

One can serve in public office and still expect the same privacy rights as anyone else.

The presidency is a bit more important, I would think, and so did the framers, as they spent a lot of time defining the office.

But this isn't an issue of "Privacy" for Reversable Mittens. This is an issue that he's a guy who has a lot of money and has managed to avoid paying the same rate the rest of pay thorugh a lot of gimmicks.

It's something that's just going to make him look bad.

You do not have a right to know what he paid in taxes. If that's a deal killer for some voters, so be it. But there is no right.

Sorry.

Do you think you and I have a right to know what deductions he took (if any)? I think we do...not the amounts. If you're a smoker and you're going to introduce/sign legislation banning smoking....shouldn't we know if you're a smoker? If you're going to be against loopholes for some at the same time taking advantage of the loopholes yourself...I think we have a right to know that.

That's nice.

And really "Christian" of you, too.

Everyone dies. I was not planning on helping him shorten his life at all.

You really think that makes it sound better?

Unlike the many that say nice things and cause evil, I say what I think. McCain was not a conservative canidate, but he was better than the undocumented individual in the white house, currently. Palin was a better choice than either of them, but she was not at the top of the ticket. She made it much easier to vote for McCain, if he did expire, she would have been a great replacement (I don't think anyone can say that about Biden). Being Christian has little to do with opinion.

I'll admit, it's not very Christian.

Besides your paranoid birfer nonsense, come on, McCain did himself in with Palin, someone whose family looks like they escaped from Jerry Springer's Green Room. She wasn't ready, and it probably made it harder for people to vote for McCain.

If McCain had picked someone like Tom Ridge, he'd have done a lot better.

Romney, Palin or even.... McCain (and it hurts to admit that) would be better than the current community lecturer that is occupying the white house. He has divided the country and is following Hugo Chavez's lead for how to make a country into a dictatorship one little step at a time, and all you that worship him as your savior are supporting the destruction (personally, I think it because of ENVY, you would rather see people destroyed than others helped) of this once great nation of liberty and freedom being converted to the proven failures of socialism under dictatorship. What is really sad: most of you will vote for him again, rather than admit you were DUPED.

We don't even know for sure where Barry was born and Havaad has his school records locked in a vault and you lefties are worried about Romney's taxes before he is even nominated?

Didn't vote for him last time, but if the GOP nominates Romney, I might.

the reason why a lot of people voted for Obama is because the GOP has lost touch with working folks and minorities. The division happened a long time before Obama got there.

So you will vote for the alternative: the party that is determined to take the country into a dictatorship? See: healthcare, gun laws, hiding gov't information, equal air time proposals (who determines that one), hate crimes (aren't all crimes committed in fits of hate?), prohibition of open displays of religious faith, promotion of immoral behavior (mob mentality encouraged, it is easier to kill mobs and claim safety of nation was at stake), tax structure being controlled to favor those that agree with gov't and are politicians, politicians getting richer while the "public" get poorer, etc
It amazes me that the people that claim to "care" and want the best for the nation will put a republican canidate under a microscope and as soon as they see a pimple, they will vote for the democrat without ever looking at anything they ever did, what their policies are, if they have a PLAN, if they ever did anything beneficial to humanity (as opposed to them voting to leave surviving "fetuses"/babies to die, in a cleaner place), etc.

You have been very critical of Romney (not the one I would prefer). Please, give us a "critical" appraisal of Obama.

I have in many places. Obama is in over his head and he isn't terribly competent. But when someone starts talking about "dictatorship", I have to conclude they are some kind of high funtioning retard. Or a Fundementalist. But I repeat myself.

Incidently, the only group that has ever tried to establish "dictatorship" in this country are the Mormons, when they tried to carve out a chunk of the west as a "Theocracy" called "Deseret". I worry more about Romney than I do about Obama.
