Not really. Usually the incumbant wins...

We haven't thrown out an incumbant in 20 years. We haven't thrown out an incumbant whose party has only held the presidency for one term in 32 years.

Romney is trailing Obama and this is really Romney's high water mark.

It's too bad the GOP couldn't come up with a real candidate.

Excuse me, weird guy.......

Who is going to "turn up the heat"? Those who oppose the President have had all burners firing for almost 5 years now. Are you trying to tell us that you nutters have been storing up fuel and will now toss it on the fire?

You have nothing. You have nominated a person who is not likeable.....and offers no new ideas. No heat.

It is seriously waaaay too early for either side to be gloating - or panicking - about polls.

I agree, it is.

But it isn't too early to realize the Demographics and political landscape do not favor Romney.

First, the Democrats have a huge advantage in the Electoral College. Just the states they've taken every time in the last five elections nets them 242 votes out of the 270 they need. This is a good argument to get rid of the electoral college, but the GOP is too wedded to the idea that 2000 was a really good result, so they won't propose meaningful changes.

Second, historically, rarely have presidents been thrown out of office when their party has only controlled the White House for one Term. Usually, voters are fair enough to realize that when you inherit a mess, you aren't going to fix it in four years. The last time they threw out an incumbant after one term for his party was 1980. The last time before that was 1892, and in that case, there was a real question who had actually won in 1888. (Garfield won the popular vote, but lost the electoral vote in 1888, but he won both in 1892, being the only president to serve non-consequitive terms.)

Third, there's the question about who is better at this election thing. Romney's history is losing to Ted Kennedy, barely beating non-entity Shannon O'Brien, losing to Huckabee and McCain and barely beating Rick Santorum. Compare that to Obama who record was losing to Bobby Rush once, winning his seat in the IL legislature a buch of times, beating well funded Machine candidates for the Democratic nomination in IL, and then winning the presidency after beating two well-established elder statesmen (Hillary and McCain).

Seriously, if Santorum and Gingridge presented a primary challenge what do you suppose Obama is going to do to him?

You can also include that McCain beat Romney..then went on to choose an unknown governor from Alaska as his running mate.

Undecided's at this stage, usually break for a challenger. That's why obama is doing so poorly. He's also not the same candidate he was. As an unknown he could say anything. Now he has a record to run on. Because his policies have not been popular, he's become more hysterial in their defense. He's also made some horrible missteps. The egotism in the Bin Laden raid, and the absolute debacle of the Chen situation has only increased the perception that he is not only inept, but more of an arrogant egotist than he was ever understood to be.

You guys are so easy to conflate when it's not your guy.

You want a real Chinese Debacle? How about the downing of a spy plane over China. Then a crew of captured Americans gets paraded in front of Chinese TV stations. Then the President of the United States "demands" the return of the crew and plane..and is essentially laughed at. Then the President is told to apologize..and at first refuses..then relents.

Or egotism? Flying out to an aircraft carrier in full military regalia to declare the end of an on-going war?

Guy, I would be really impressed if I heard that from someone who voted for him in 2008 rather than someone like you who has been nursing a 4 year grudge...

I've not met an Obama Supporter yet who has told me he's ready to go out and pull a switch for Romney.
