GOOD GAWD!

Bill Clinton’s former Labor Secretary was on Hardball railing against GOP attempts to rein in runwaway government spending. His thinking is that if you’re in a boat that springs a leak, the last thing you should do is plug the hole because you’re going to be hungry soon and it’ll get you closer to the fish faster.

Transcript from RCP:

“You don’t want government to hold back, you want government right now, yes, the deficit’s a long-term problem, but right now you don’t want to cut government spending, yet Eric Cantor and the Republicans are indulging, you hear it over and over and over,” Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich said.

Robert Reich is right. The public held debt in relation to GDP, it is only a bit over half of what it was in 1946. When Republicans created massive deficits, it was not an issue...SUDDENLY it is.

During the Great Depression conservatives raised the same objections to F.D.R.’s programs. They said the economy must be left alone and it would correct itself in the long run. Commerce Secretary Harry Hopkins shot back: “People don’t eat in the long run. They eat every day.”

"Republicans care more about property, Democrats care more about people"
Ted Sorensen - President Kennedy's Special Counsel & Adviser, and primary speechwriter

Yeah let's cut government spending, I agree,

Lets start by withdrawling the troops from the 160+ nations where they are, cut our fleet in half, our military in half and while we're at it, aren't those MILITARY PENIONS a real drag, too.

So screw those guys just like we're planning on screwing all public unions members.

Do all those things and guess what?

We no longer have a budget deficit.

Which of you self proclaiming conservative Libertarians are with me?

Let's REALLY cut spending and stop kidding outselves.

Most of the PORK goes to billionaires, anyway.

Robert 3rd Reich says don't cut spending in the bad times so when IS the time to cut spending? No asshole politician is gonna suggest cutting spending in the good times.

Wadda' fuggin' idiot!

And how much did we just spend to bomb Libya? And to continue a no-fly zone? To cut are we to take funds from our citizens so we can bomb other countries? We need to re-evaluate our military/civil expenditures and decide if we are going to be the worlds military or to have a military for own protection.

In 1997, as concerns continued to mount over the size of the federal budget deficit, Congress and President Bill Clinton reached agreement on a piece of legislation designed to balance the nation's books by 2002.

The mythical "balanced budget" was all smoke, mirrors, spin and bullshit.
