Cancer. She was only 61.

I remember well that she said it would be 'special' that a woman went to space when it was no longer a big deal.

Ride Sally Ride

"High Flight"

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even[8] eagle flew —
And, while with silent lifting mind I have trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
- Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Quite a lady we need more poeple who believe that your are not born to greatness but can get there is you try regardless of race.

How strange that rw's can revere this woman but hate other gays.

go figure.

But, her partner was with her at the end and that's what matters.

John Gillespie McGee, Jr, was 19 when he wrote that, then died shortly thereafter fighting in the RAF against the Nazis.

Sally Ride had that type of indomitable spirit, too.

Well chosen.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Space used to be a man's world. Then came Sally Ride, who blazed a cosmic trail into orbit for U.S. women. With a pitch perfect name out of a pop song refrain, she joined the select club of American space heroes the public knew by heart: Shepard, Glenn, Armstrong and Aldrin.

Don't mean to bring up politics but where the heck is our space program? Sally was a great story. I forget what grade I was in when she went up. Everything is skunk works now I guess. A shame.

Pioneer for women.

From what I read, very private. She didn't come out until her death, they are saying.
