Very sad news. Major Dick Winters has passed away.

:(

Richard "Dick" Winters, the Easy Company commander whose World War II exploits were made famous by the book and television miniseries "Band of Brothers," died last week in central Pennsylvania. He was 92.

Winters died following a several-year battle with Parkinson's Disease, longtime family friend William Jackson said Monday.

An intensely private and humble man, Winters had asked that news of his death be withheld until after his funeral, Jackson said. Winters lived in Hershey, Pa., but died in suburban Palmyra....

Richard (Dick) Winters, the Army commander whose heroism during World War II was immortalized in the book and television miniseries "Band of Brothers," died last week in central Pennsylvania. He was 92.

An intensely private man, Winters had instructed loved ones not to release news of his death until after his funeral. He died on Jan. 2 from complications of Parkinson’s disease, his family said.

The story of Winters and other members of Company E, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, known as Easy Company, was chronicled in a book by Stephen Ambrose and later the 10-part miniseries on HBO.

The reward for a good life is often a good life. Ninety two is ripe age for this fine man, may he rest in peace.

RIP and condolences for the loss.

Equal but different...

I thank him for the great service he gave this country.

In honor of his memory I say we not talk violently to each other in this country.

There was a quote from the TV series when a lieutenant warns MAJ Winters as they head into Bastogne that they're going to be surrounded by Germans. Winters is quoted as saying, "We're paratroopers, lieutenant. We're supposed to be surrounded."

Unfortunately, Hollywood has a way of embellishing, but I haven't found anything that contradicts this quote. In other words, Winters probably said these words and they weren't made up just to make the script more juicy. If so, it shows that he clearly understood the unique nature of the paratrooper mission. MAJ Winters and his men paved the way to establish what would become paratrooper traditions. And his words are still true today: Paratroopers are supposed to be surrounded. They go into impossible places to do impossible things until the rest of the Army can catch up.

Rest in Peace, Sir.

All the Way! HOOAH!
