Watching Levon at Merlefest in 2008 was simply one of the best concerts I have ever seen. If you have the scratch go to festivallink.net and get the recording.

I always liked the Band, but that concert made me a huge Levon Helm fan.... and watching him play Mandolin on the song I'm putting up inspired me to pick up the mandolin I had in my basement and actually learn to play it.... now it's a regular part of my band's music. We use it for 2-3 songs/set.

RIP Levon....

This clip was from the Merlefest Concert that I spoke of....

Question for hard core Band listeners; after a long lecture about General Stoneman, I got into a debate: did Joan Baez sing "so much cavalry came" OR "Stonewall's cavalry came" in her version of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down?

A musical tribute to Levon was given long before his death,
here it is again, Across The Great Divide, from me to Levon

A very tasteful drummer, nothing fancy, but his fill-ins were always in the right place at the right time and perfect for the mood of the song.

The Band - Stage Fright - YouTube

Stage Fright is one of my favorites from The Band. I'm really saddened by this as I've seen them twice, once when they were the back up band to Bob Dylan.
I do believe that makes 3 members now that have died from that band.
I think Garth Hudson and Robbie Robertson are the only survivors now.
