The worst nightmare for Vancouver is coming true.

Not only did the city's beloved Canucks lose in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final, it was shut out 4-0. Now a scene reminiscent of 1994 has emerged, when the city rioted under similar circumstances, with random fires, flipped cars, pole climbing, and riot police. (Scroll down for video.)

Beer bottles were tossed at giant TV screens in the game's dying moments, cars and garbage cans were set fire, and fistfights broke out, per the Canadian Press. Flash bombs were used to try to disperse the angry crowd, CBC reports.

Most reports and eyewitnesses, however, say the trouble has been caused by a small segment of fans. "I think it was a few people ... Everybody else is watching, some are cheering," said one eyewitness.

I agree 100% that race has nothing to do with it.

Seriously...

I meant in terms of other sports rooting interests. There's no NBA, MLB, NFL/CFL or other major sporting franchise in the region. Therefore the diehard sports fans have only one team to hitch their star to.... a team that hasn't won a damn thing during their almost 41 years in existance. That becomes exceptionally frustrating for sports fans. I say that as someone who wrote a threatening letter to Bill Buckner after the 1986 World Series; but my parents wouldn't let me mail it (I was 12 at the time). Buckner DID receive more than 500 threats from Red Sox fans after that World Series.

Vancouver Riots 2011: Couple Kisses During Chaos

While a city burned its Stanley Cup dream in the flurry of flames, looting and bone-breaking that was the 2011 Vancouver riots, an altogether different sort of passion spilled, literally, into the streets.

At the moment, they're known only as the kissing couple.

But that won't last long.

When this unlikely snapshot of lovers entangled on a tear-gas filled street, with riot police in the fore and background emerged Thursday morning, you can bet the great media race was on.

It will, most certainly, be the picture that launched a thousand media inquiries. Who are they? What were they thinking? And who will get to them first?

"We're looking for the kissing couple in this photo," CBC News tweeted at 10am Thursday "Know them?"

Good start. After all, the Twitterverse, as usual, caught the image on the quick.

Looks like Gerrard Trojillo (gt23GOTHUNDER) was first on the mark, tweeting, "lol couple kissing during #canucksriot" at about 10 am on Thursday. He was referring to the Esquire blog that first published the photo.

The riots began after Vancouver's Canucks lost the Stanley Cup last night to the Boston Bruins.

Until I heard this on the radio this morning driving to work, I had almost forgotten hockey existed. Cute little game. People make money skating around like that?
That being said, it doesn’t take much to make some people go ballistic. I used shake my head in disgust whenever I watched news about people destroying their own city over the results of a sporting event. Now, I just shrug my shoulders in apathy.
If we’re evolving, it’s not happening quickly enough. If we were designed by some Uber-being, he has a serious sadistic side.

Why is this on the race relations forum? Is there something racist about hockey?

If black people had rioted like this in Detroit last night, you bet your ass it would have been on this board this morning. This post belongs here, shows we all do the same stupid shit.

They have lost all proportion of the fact that it is a game. Then add the hooligan factor. Mix in a little too much alcohol, and you have a prescription for violence. It is obvious that the teams, the league and the police officials don't really care. They expect it! Look at the 30 foot high chain link fences that separate the fields from the fans. Look at the fact that the riot police are already in gear waiting for the incident.

It is a self fulfilling expectation.

If they were serious about controlling the violence they would ban fans, and cancel games. Force compliance. Violators should be seriously prosecuted.
