According to conservative pundit, Kathleee Parker (hat tip to Kathleen on the Depends Undergarmets analogy):

"the GOP has surrendered its high ground to its lowest brows.....Suffice it to say, the Republican Party is largely comprised of white, married Christians. Anyone watching the two conventions last summer can't have missed the stark differences: One party was brimming with energy, youth and diversity; the other felt like an annual Depends sales meeting."

As Republicans sort out the reasons for their defeat, they likely will overlook or dismiss the gorilla in the pulpit.

Three little letters, great big problem: G-O-D.

I'm bathing in holy water as I type.

To be more specific, the evangelical, right-wing, oogedy-boogedy branch of the GOP is what ails the erstwhile conservative party and will continue to afflict and marginalize its constituents if reckoning doesn't soon cometh.

Simply put: Armband religion is killing the Republican Party. And, the truth -- as long as we're setting ourselves free -- is that if one were to eavesdrop on private conversations among the party intelligentsia, one would hear precisely that....

Which is to say, the GOP has surrendered its high ground to its lowest brows. In the process, the party has alienated its non-base constituents, including other people of faith (those who prefer a more private approach to worship), as well as secularists and conservative-leaning Democrats who otherwise might be tempted to cross the aisle....

Religious conservatives become defensive at any suggestion that they've had something to do with the GOP's erosion. And, though the recent Democratic sweep can be attributed in large part to a referendum on Bush and the failing economy, three long-term trends identified by Emory University's Alan Abramowitz have been devastating to the Republican Party: increasing racial diversity, declining marriage rates and changes in religious beliefs.

Suffice it to say, the Republican Party is largely comprised of white, married Christians. Anyone watching the two conventions last summer can't have missed the stark differences: One party was brimming with energy, youth and diversity; the other felt like an annual Depends sales meeting.

White, married Christians are the "lowest brows"? If anyone said this about any other group, the moderators would put this thread in the "Hate" section.

But they won't.

Hey, white people! Are you starting to get the feeling that it isn't really conservative platforms the system doesn't like, it's YOUR WHITE FACE?

No. I think someone tells letwingers they're supposed to hate rightwingers so they do, and vice-versa. I also think neither side really knows why.

Let me know when you figure out it's about power and money and not skin color.

And don't derail this thread into an issue of race. You have your own little forum I created just for you. Please use it.

It's about time they recognized that pandering to the fundies made them look ridiculous.

It's all about hatred! And bigotry for white christian republicans.. End of story.

Hey, it was a rightwinger who wrote this, not me.

Personally, I agree with you. And I think Kathleen Parker is wrong.

I think the GOP should embrace the fundamentalist christian rightwing even more, and tie their party to the fundamentalist's agenda.

I don't think the dig was against white christian republicans but against the religious right in general.

No it's about republicans pandering to the religious right and having it backfire on them. They deserve what they got in the last election.

You're reading into it something that is not there. Read the whole article - the gist of it is that the republicans are at fault for pandering to the religious right and voters reacted negatively.

Do you know what the word "gist" means?

as if the left didn't go more christian this election :eusa_whistle:

interesting,

Two thoughts_

One is the "christian" they "went" was a pro-choice non-fundamentalist route and...

Two is the nation is mostly faithful, and that is human nature, but it is not religious in a one-size-fits-all way so the left 'going christian' is more similar to coming back to getting in touch with the constituents.

Of course, as a catholic who deeply values her faith, I was happy to see religion as a matter of discourse this year, clear up some of the distinctions between the two parties.

The republican party can't make it without religious conservatives, and the religious conservatives will never be a solid majority so they need the major party. Interesting to watch the different legs of the party try to compromise.

I always get somewhat puzzled when the socialists in this country, and on this board, start throwing names and unprovable accusations against white Christians who happen to be conservative and vote Republican. They do so because that party best represents their political views. These kind of attacks tell me that those who write this kind of stuff know they have already lost the arguement and therefore must resort to throwing insults to try and convince people of their point of view.

This a common tactic for socialists because they cannot convince people on the merits of their ideas on collectivism and government dominance of our lives. So, why not come to a higher plane of discussion and compete on conflicting philosophies of government and issues where there is clearly a huge difference on the role of government, especially since the Constitution provides for limited government. Let's try something new, change if you will, and follow the Constituion instead of making up new powers and authority for the Feds out of whole clothe. We will all be better for it!
