Think Progress » Right-Wing American Family Association Misfires In The War On Christmas

It’s not even Thanksgiving, but the American Family Association (AFA) has already taken up arms in the War on Christmas. On Nov. 11, the right-wing organization announced that it was urging its followers to boycott Gap Inc. (Gap, Banana Republic, and Old Navy) from now until Christmas Day because the company refuses to say the word “Christmas”:

For years, Gap has refused to use the word Christmas in its television commercials, newspaper ads and in-store promotions, despite tens of thousands of consumer requests to recognize Christmas and in spite of repeated requests from AFA to do the same.

Last year, Gap issued this politically-correct statement to Christmas shoppers: “Gap recognizes that many traditions are celebrated throughout this season and we feel it is important to display holiday signage that is inclusive to everyone.”

Christmas is special because of Jesus. It’s not just a “winter holiday.” For millions of Americans the giving and receiving of gifts is in honor of the One who gave Himself. For the Gap to pretend that isn’t the foundation of the Christmas season is political correctness at best and religious bigotry at worst. The Gap is censoring the word Christmas, pure and simple.

Now, besides the countless products with the word "Christmas" on them.

And of course, this:

Gee, what was first? :eusa_whistle:

So a christian religious group wants other christians that celebrate christmas as the birth of christ to not shop in those stores?

Good for them I guess. Me personally if the gap has a gift I want to buy for someone on my agnostic christmas gathering I'll buy it there. Its a free country and companies can say or not say what they want and people can shop or not shop where they want for whatever reasons.

I wont shop walmart for example, nothing to do with christmas just a personal choice based on the way they conduct business.

Merry Christmas Everyone :).

IMHO - there is no such thing as an "agnostic Christmas."
Christmas is a Christian holiday - why would non-Christians celebrate the birth of Christ?
If you want a sectarian winter holiday, then go for it. But it ain't "CHRISTmas."

Nope my family, on both my mother's and father's side, has always celebrated christmas with presents, santa clause for the kiddies, and a family dinner gathering.

We have NEVER gone to a church mass or celebrated christmas as the birth of christ. We celebrate christmas as a day to show our love and appreciation for our family members. Nothing religious about it at all.

Our christmas is secular.

No such animal - you may CALL it Christmas - but it ain't Christmas.
I can run around the house naked and call it Yom Kippur - but that doesn't make it true.

You will see no manger scene, etc at my house on Christmas.

Just an fyi I was raised as a holy roller till 16. But I managed to recover.

christmas is a pagan holiday....by any name....started with the solstice...but christians had to steal it...seems to be the biggest enemy of christmas is christians and their poor behavior and materical greed.

I recommend everyone who has not seen it to watch "The History of Christmas" on the history channel. It will be back on soon.

I can't believe the gibberish you guys come up with to defend the de-religifying of our nation. My favorite is the one where you say christmas is just a holiday without Jesus well that is like saying you can celebrate islamic holidays without engaging in any islamic customs.

Can you guys just get real for five minutes? No one has ever stopped you from shopping at the gap if you choose to but people who are upset about this are simply engaging in their right of free trade and they are advocating not to trade at those stores until they get a change. Now if you are so upset about this then you can also protest and shop at the Young Communist Guild or the Marx's Books and Manifestos.

I know that its a part of your socialist agenda to destroy all religions accept the one where we worship the state but other people don't want to get into this and you have to respect your way of thinking so I'm not saying Merry Obamamas or Happy Obama day or anything really fascist like that.

Oh yes, you are certainly free to do whatever you want and to call it whatever you want. Just as I am free to run around my house naked and call it a Yom Kippur celebration. That's my right too.

But - by definition - what you and your family are celebrating is definitely NOT Christmas. Call it what you will.
