Rick Perry's book a treasure trove for foes

Indeed it is. His ideas for SS alone are enough to get him thrown off the national stage.

Yeah, keep telling yourself that.

Poll: 81% fear for Social Security - Jennifer Epstein - POLITICO.com

The vast majority of Americans see Social Security headed toward a crisis, and most think the system needs a major overhaul, a new poll suggests.

Eighty-one percent of those surveyed for a Washington Post-ABC News poll released Thursday said they think that if no changes are made to Social Security, the program will be in trouble, while just 15 percent said the system will be fine as it is.

I'm just wondering what kind of "special people" these 15% are. (As in I can't say "retarded" anymore, so they are "Special".)

Fearing for the future solvency of SS does not translate into anything resembling what Perry proposes in his book. What he proposes, letting states and not the Fed run SS, would destroy it...which is what the GOP has been trying to do since its inception.

'I wouldn’t have written that book if I was going to run for the presidency,' Perry once said.

Rick Perry describes Social Security as a “violent” attack on core American values. He says Sarah Palin may have been right that the Affordable Care Act created death panels. He says it was “unprincipled” to establish the Department of Homeland Security.

That’s not the provocative, distorted language of a 2012 attack ad — at least, not yet. Rather, those are words right out of the Texas governor’s 2010 book, “Fed Up!” — a slim volume that may be one of the biggest gifts ever given to the opponents of a presidential candidate.

It’s a treasure trove of oppo research, a target so ripe that Perry himself pointed to it last year as prime evidence he wasn’t interested in running for president.

“I wouldn’t have written that book if I was going to run for the presidency of the United States,” he said in one national interview.

Did he admit to using coke?

Nice attempt at fear mongering...the truth is quite a bit different....

Asked by a woman in the crowd about Social Security being viewed as an entitlement program, Perry reiterated the suggestion in his anti-Washington book, Fed Up!, that the program amounts to a Ponzi scheme.

"It is a Ponzi scheme for these young people. The idea that they're working and paying into Social Security today, that the current program is going to be there for them, is a lie," Perry said. "It is a monstrous lie on this generation, and we can't do that to them."

Later, in Des Moines, when a reporter asked about the suggestion that his campaign was backing off some positions in the staunch states-rights book, Perry said, "I haven't backed off anything in my book. So read the book again and get it right."

National conversation

He told the Ottumwa crowd that for people who are drawing Social Security or near eligibility "like me," he wasn't proposing a change in the program. But he said there should be a national conversation about potential changes for others, including raising the age of eligibility and establishing a threshold based on a person's means.

"Does Warren Buffett need to get Social Security? Maybe not," he said.

More interesting facts and quotes in the article, but that's all I'm comfortable posting.

Maybe the states could run it better. Frankly, I've always found it a lot easier to work with state agencies than federal ones, and I've dealt with (and worked for) both over the years.

Frankly, all things being equal, the Feds could fuck up a wet dream.

The thing is, Perry is right. Social Security was a Ponzi Scheme from day one. There was never an account Marked "Joe B" starting from when I worked my first job in a Pizza Place in 1978. All the money I've paid in has either been paid out to oldsters or converted into bonds that were used to pay for wars and bridges and welfare queens having babies.

And now, someone is going to be left holding the bag. Either those of us who paid into all our lives will be told "Sorry. Out of money!" or youngsters are going to pay half their salaries to keep it afloat as all us Baby Boomers retire.

I can't see how the states could mess it up any worse.

Obama said SocSec is broke...that's better?

Naturally you can provide President Obama's exact quote, right?

Perry's idea for SS, outlined in his book, would destroy it...which is their ultimate goal anyway.

You cannot destroy that which is irrevocably broken.

People understand SS is broke. They understand it needs major changes. Obama's solution is....well, he'll get back to us on that.

"Nancy Pelosi says the Republicans are cutting Social Security, the leader of the DNC says that Alan West should be ashamed of himself for voting for cutting medicare/social security, and finally, Obama alludes to the myth that we’re throwing grandma over a cliff.

Here are the facts about the history of Social Security:

History Lesson on Your Social Security Card

Just in case some of you young whippersnappers (& some older ones) didn't know this.
It's easy to check out, if you don't believe it. Be sure and show it to your family
and friends. They need a little history lesson on what's what and it doesn't matter
whether you are Democrat or Republican. Facts are Facts.

Social Security Cards up until the 1980s expressly stated the number and
card were not to be used for identification purposes. Since nearly everyone in the
United States now has a number, it became convenient to use it anyway and the
message, NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION, was removed.

An old Social Security card with the "NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION" message.

Our Social Security
Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social
Security (FICA) Program. He promised:

1.) That participation in the Program would be
Completely voluntary,
No longer Voluntary

2.) That the participants would only have to pay
1% of the first $1,400 of their annual
Incomes into the Program,
Now 7.65%
on the first $90,000

3.) That the money the participants elected to put
into the Program would be deductible from
their income for tax purposes each year,
No longer tax deductible

4.) That the money the participants put into the
independent 'Trust Fund' rather than into the
general operating fund, and therefore, would
only be used to fund the Social Security
Retirement Program, and no other
Government program, and,
Under Johnson the money was moved to
The General Fund and Spent

5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed
as income.
Under Clinton & Gore
Up to 85% of your Social Security can be Taxed

Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are
now receiving a Social Security check every month --
and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of
the money we paid to the Federal government to 'put
away' -- you may be interested in the following:

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- ----

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the
independent 'Trust Fund' and put it into the
general fund so that Congress could spend it?
A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically
controlled House and Senate.
------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --

Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax
deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?
A: The Democratic Party.
------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -----

Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social
Security annuities?
A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the
'tie-breaking' deciding vote as President of the
Senate, while he was Vice President of the US
------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -

Q: Which Political Party decided to start
giving annuity payments to immigrants?

AND MY FAVORITE:
A: That's right!
Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party.
Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65,
began to receive Social Security payments! The
Democratic Party gave these payments to them,
even though they never paid a dime into it!

------------ -- ------------ --------- ----- ------------ --------- ---------

Then, after violating the original contract (FICA),
the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want
to take your Social Security away!

And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it!
If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of awareness will be
planted and maybe changes will evolve.
But it's worth a try. How many people can YOU send this to?"
