REVOLT: N. Dakota To Vote On Eliminating All Property Tax...

Property taxes should NOT be abolished.

There are people running ads in the state claiming, or suggesting, that abolishing property taxes will lower people's taxes. No it won't, at least not for the middle-class. It'll just shift the taxes someplace else, probably to highly regressive sales taxes.

A property tax penalizes people for holding onto property that they should sell. For example, your neighbor moves out of his house and buys a new one across town. He decides to keep his old house. But, because no one lives there, the appearance rapidly deteriorates, creating a neighborhood eyesore. I like to think that such people are paying some sort of penalty for that, in the form of property tax.

Sales taxes are NOT regressive.
People who spend less, pay less. Very simple.
"Should sell"...Who the fuck are you to decide what should and should not be sold!!!
This is typical statist central planning bullshit that libs support.
And once again one of you greedy fucking libs admits that taxes are a PENALTY....
What fucking universe do you come from. "Leave the property vacant an allow it to deteriorate." You are a clown with a computer.
Maybe that kind of thing occurs in the shit hole in which you live, but it does not happen in most places.
People own property on which they do not occupy hold that as an investment for their future or they use it for income.
Many of you libs look upon this with seething hatred. You cry "it's NOT FAIR for someone to own all that property. Those rich fucks. I want the government to PENALIZE them because that RICH fuck offends me!"...
Blow it out your ass ,you greedy bastard.
NO need for you to reply. You're on ignore from here forward.

How did the states manage to pay their bills BEFORE property taxes were invented?

Property taxes are paid to the localities, not the state.
Not true in every state. Here in NC the local governments collect taxes. A portion of those dollars are turned over to the State government and redistributed. SHitty part is the revenue is distributed to whomever the Capitol political power structure decides is deserving.
It's a shitty system. I think property taxes should stay where they are collected.

Fuck infrastructure! WE GOT OILLLLLLLLLLL*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*until we use up all the oil, and then we're fucked. But who cares! FUCK TAXES!!!

Would they also give up all the oil subsidies that they get, that are helping make them all rich...on the tax payer's bill?

Shit. I'm a Liberal, I'm not allowed to speak for the tax payer. I forgot.

you speak for your own self interest. As do all libs. You are selfish, self centered and closed minded.

Uh oh, Big Brother ain't gonna like this at all. Might have to go all NDAA up on their asses. Voting on eliminating Property Taxes? They must be Terrorists.

North Dakota Considers Eliminating Property Tax

Since Californians shrank their property taxes more than three decades ago by passing Proposition 13, people around the nation have echoed their dismay over such levies, putting forth plans to even them, simplify them, cap them, slash them. In an election here on Tuesday, residents of North Dakota will consider a measure that reaches far beyond any of that — one that abolishes the property tax entirely.

“I would like to be able to know that my home, no matter what happens to my income or my life, is not going to be taken away from me because I can’t pay a tax,” said Susan Beehler, one in a group of North Dakotans who have pressed for an amendment to the state’s Constitution to end the property tax. They argue that the tax is unpredictable, inconsistent, counter to the concept of property ownership and needless in a state that, thanks in part to wildly successful oil drilling, finds itself in the rare circumstance of carrying budget reserves.

“When,” Ms. Beehler asked, “did we come to believe that government should get rich and we should get poor?”

An unusual coalition of forces, including the North Dakota Chamber of Commerce and the state’s largest public employees’ unions, vehemently oppose the idea, arguing that such a ban would upend this quiet capital. Some big unanswered questions, the opponents say, include precisely how lawmakers would make up some $812 million in annual property tax revenue; what effect the change would have on hundreds of other state laws and regulations that allude to the more than century-old property tax; and what decisions would be left for North Dakota’s cities, counties and other governing boards if, say, they wanted to build a new school, hire more police, open a new park.

This is a plan without a plan,” said Andy Peterson, president and chairman of the North Dakota Chamber of Commerce, who acknowledged that property taxes have climbed in some parts of the state and that North Dakota’s political leaders need to tackle the issue. “But this solution is a little like giving a barber a razor-sharp butcher knife — and by the way, this barber is blind — and asking him or her to give you a haircut. You’ll get the job done, but you might be missing an ear or an eye"...

DRUDGE REPORT 2012®

This is not a taxpayer revolt. God you guys are pathetic. The reason it is being discussed is due to all the extra revenue coming into the state from oil production. Without that tax revenue, nobody would be discussing this. Even with the oil revenue, it would most likely create a shortfall of revenue. One of the problems is that property taxes are increasing quickly as property values double and triple as their is a shortage of housing in some areas where oil production has brought hundreds to thousands of new workers. A more reasonable approach would be to put some type of cap on the property taxes and refund any excess revenue back to the home/property owners.

Time for federal property taxes.

And again...i would assume... only some would be required to pay..... hell no.

No need for federal property taxes, but the fact is that everyone pays for property taxes unless they are homeless. If you rent, property taxes are part of your rent payment. Landlords don't pay the property taxes for their tenants out of the goodness of their hearts.

A property tax is a great way to get the other guy to pay for your government tit. Gimme, gimme, gimme, and make that guy over there pay for it.

Hey fag, aren't all taxes a way to the other guy to pay for your government tit?

Eliminate the tit, and the taxes will go away. Eliminate just a tax, then another tax will go up.

Very good. Other taxes go up. Including taxes on non-property owners. This widens the tax base. Get it, queer bait?

You can implement a sales tax, or increase the sales tax. That way tourists, hookers, pimps, drug dealers, and little stump-humping forest dwelling nazis are contributing.
Ahh....You just nailed it. The injustice of property taxes lies right there. Renters get the full benefit of property taxes yet they get a free ride.
Yes yes yes...."They pay property taxes in their rent"...Horse shit. They do not.
I think municipalities should look to renters for a contribution. Heck, If I were a member of our town government I would propose a fee on every rental unit in town. That would result in ALL residents contributing the services they receive.

These claims are always untrue. The market sets rate, not the taxes. You pay what you pay for rent, because that's what the market demands. If property taxes go up, your rent isn't going to go up because if it, anymore than your rent will go down if property taxes go down. Your rent is set by the market. The landlord will charge as much for rent as demand will allow, regardless of what the property taxes are. The landlord isn't going to charge you less than what the market will support, out of the goodness of his heart.

He'd also try to figure out a way to force your kids to be gay too!

Impossible to have a rational discussion with you lefties.
Look genius, Obama has all but said he wants fossil fuel to no longer be used.
Earlier this year when gas was approaching $4 per gallon, Obama said "Americans can lower their cost of gas by using less gasoline"...
"I would be comfortable with $4 gas"...
"We need to get off foreign oil by converting to green energy"..
"If companies insist on building coal plants, they will go bankrupt"..
Energy secretary Chu.. "we must figure out a way to get US gas prices to the levels in Europe"...
Those are not verbatim quotes, but these people said these things or to the effect.

Obama has pushed all his chips in on this green nonsense. Now that there have been billions wasted on these companies which could not make a dime, Obama hasn't said a fucking word about green energy. That's because he knows he'd get his ass handed to him if he touched it during the campaign.

To pukes like Obama, vehicles represent independence from government. Obama is a central planner socialist. He cannot stand freedom and liberty. So he has done several things( Shut down Keystone.. Bypassed Congress and unleashed the EPA giving that agency broad powers) and threatened to do more if he does not get his way.

Hey listen, I'm fine with one day not using fossil fuels myself. But that's only because I accept that it's a limited resource with some very potentially disastrous environmental consequences attached to them.

You know, because I'm smart.

I know ND is a pretty wealthy little State but I can't see no property taxes.

Taxes are what funds the cities and towns. Police, Fire, EMS, schools. Doesn't sound like a sustainable idea to me.

I'm very certain if you eliminate property Taxes, there are PLENTY of other taxes that can cover those services you list... Rest easy.

Smart people replace "what works" with PROVEN technologies that can meet demand, before they arbitrarily destroy those technologies that work, simply because they have agenda's against them. Trashing the Coal, and Gas Industries because you "don't like them", and NOT having a viable replacement for them is, "you know"... Pretty stupid.
