How hard is it to do? I will be 59 soon. I need my ssi now, not at 62. No way I can work a regular job. When I went to see my doctor he said go for it, since my RA is progressing and will be worse as I age.

So I'm wondering if anyone here has applied and how difficult it may be.

I haven't done it for myself but I've done it for someone else and it's simple to do on-line.

Social Security Online: What You Can Do Online

Call the help desk if you have any questions... Done! :)

Since you're applying before retirement age for disability SSI you will need to go through the process of providing medical documentation of your condition, etc...

Apply for benefits
You can:

* Apply for Social Security retirement or spouse's benefits.
* Apply for Social Security disability benefits (includes the Adult Disability Report).
* Begin or continue the Adult Disability Report.
When you apply for any type of disability benefits, we need information about your medical, work, and education history to help us decide if you are disabled.

* Apply for extra help with your Medicare prescription drug costs.
* Apply for Medicare benefits.
* Check your application status.
If you applied for Social Security benefits, you can check the status of your application online. (Not available for SSI.)

I have some work to do. Gotta remember when this was done, that was done, etc.

If you don't need disability, it is easy to get, the system is defrauded at an incredible degree.
If you do need disability, it can take years.

I can get ssi in 3 years but....I sure could use it now since I will not be able to work at all. I haven't worked for a few years now. Mostly due to the economy, the rest due to health situations. Sigh. Sucks getting old. Thank God I have the ex. If not for him, I'd be up shit creek.

I went to a yard sale last year and this gal was all bleary eyed, smelled of vodka. My SIL bought a couch from her and this woman hefted it all by herself over to the truck and loaded it in. During the transaction, she was chatting with my SIL and she said she was looking for a room to rent, hence selling all her stuff. That she was on disability due to back problems. I'm like, wtf??? Here she is, drunk, hefting a couch even I would have trouble lifting and she's on disability????
eye roll.

Don't be afraid to click around and read the info before you start the actual application. Click as if you want to start and see what it says, etc...And I think you can start the process and go back and finish it later too.

If you feel more comfortable doing it in person and on paper, just use the website to find a local office and some helpful secretary will explain everything...

Your doctor(s) will be the one(s) ultimately supplying the medical documentation.

We will review your application to make sure you meet some basic requirements for disability benefits and evaluate any current work activities. If you meet these requirements, we will send your application to the Disability Determination Services office in your state.

This state agency completes the disability decision for us. Doctors and disability specialists in the state agency ask your doctors for information about your condition. They will consider all the facts in your case. They will use the medical evidence from your doctors and hospitals, clinics or institutions where you have been treated and all other information. They will ask your doctors:

* What your medical condition is;
* When your medical condition began;
* How your medical condition limits your activities;
* What the medical tests have shown; and
* What treatment you have received.

They also will ask the doctors for information about your ability to do work-related activities, such as walking, sitting, lifting, carrying and remembering instructions. Your doctors are not asked to decide if you are disabled.

The state agency staff may need more medical information before they can decide if you are disabled. If more information is not available from your current medical sources, the state agency may ask you to go for a special examination. We prefer to ask your own doctor, but sometimes the exam may have to be done by someone else. Social Security will pay for the exam and for some of the related travel costs.

My wife looked into it because she has a disability that prevents her from working. She didn't even start the application process because she's married to me.

Adult Disability and Work History Report: How We Make the Decision

My doctor said day before yesterday when I went in to get an xray on my knee (didn't know if I pulled a muscle or if it was RA that flared up in it) he said it would be hard to get on it from what he knows, but will do all he can to help me. I can't use my wrists very well, nor grasp. I can type, but my hands have to be wrapped around the wrists. My fingers are limber but they claw up at night when I go to bed so I have to soak in hot water and massage to get them to uncurl. I can walk, but my ankles are bad as are my toes. So far, just light hip pain but nothing major. The KNEE hurts really bad, hence the xrays. So yeah...he knows I have a problem doing normal stuff. It sucks.

But if I can't get on ssi early, I guess I will have to start ebay selling again to survive. If I can find the right stuff. Kinda hard to go treasure hunting with no hands.

Did she get on it?
Maybe I should ask Ex to remarry me, lol. He would. We still love each other..but not in that way, if you get my drift.

No. There was an income/net worth thing that killed the deal I believe.

Since you're able to type on the internet and do message boards and ebay, maybe you aren't disabled enough to qualify? It's about your ability to work.

You can't. SSI is going away as soon as the reps finish off Medicare.

doubtful JB, as it is a social contract we all pay for, and necessary to maintain a sane society

the measure of any great society is in those social contracts, how thier young and old , as well as unfit fare

oh i know, i'm probablay a bleeding heart liberal stating what was really conservative by yesteryear standards

but i've just seen too much out there, and in fact i'm the bumblee that shouldn't fly due to a qualifing incident in '73

but fly i do , such are the nature of things that are labeled erroneously of late in our current social gestalt

Yeah, I thought of that too. I CAN type. If I could get a desk job or some kind of pc work related thing, no problem. However, I have to take breaks often to soak my hands. Seems the typing limbers my fingers up more but after awhile, I start to feel fatigue so I have to go lay down for awhile. And, there are no jobs like that around here. Front desk clerk at a motel would be ideal but nobody is hiring around here. It's all family run, and most are from Pakistan and have family run the places.

Plus there are other factors I'm not talking about, not for a message board as possible fodder. Other health issue. Makes it really difficult to find employment to fit MY needs and instead of fitting THEIR needs.
