Colin Powell's former State Department chief of staff, Lawrence Wilkerson (left), condemned the Republican Party on Friday night, telling MSNBC's Ed Schultz, "My party is full of racists."

The biting assessment from retired Army Col. Lawrence Wilkerson came in response to controversy over a comment made by Mitt Romney campaign co-chair John Sununu, who suggested Powell endorsed President Obama because both men are African-American.

Wilkerson called Sununu’s comments “an unfortunate slip of words,” but said he believes a larger issue besets the GOP.

“My party, unfortunately, is the bastion of those people — not all of them, but most of them — who are still basing their positions on race,” Wilkerson told MSNBC’s Ed Schultz on Friday.

“Let me just be candid: My party is full of racists,” he said.

“My party, unfortunately, is the bastion of those people — not all of them, but most of them — who are still basing their decisions on race,” Wilkerson told MSNBC’s Ed Schultz. “Let me just be candid: My party is full of racists, and the real reason a considerable portion of my party wants President Obama out of the White House has nothing to do with the content of his character, nothing to do with his competence as commander in chief and president, and everything to do with the color of his skin, and that’s despicable.”

Powell broke with the Republican Party to endorse Obama for a second time this week, prompting Sununu — a top Romney surrogate — to say, “he’s got a slightly different reason for preferring President Obama…I think when you have somebody of your own race that you’re proud of being president of the United States.”

Sununu walked the comment back hours later, saying in a statement he did not believe Powell’s endorsement “was based on anything but his support of the president’s policies.”

Sununu is a liar obviously.

This begs the question, how in Hades did Colin Powell reach the pinnacle of his career then?

Did the Democrats appoint him? Did the Democrats make Colin Powell the first black Secretary of State?

What I find amazing about Colin Powell was that he could suck up to the same people who called him a "house ******".

They called him an "uncle Tom". And yet he prefers them.

False accusations of racism is all the dumbocrats have left.

Think about - their tax & spend policies have been an epic failure ($16 trillion in debt and a god awful economy), their government-control policies have been an epic failure (horrific job market), and the rest of the policies have proven to be epic failures (energy prices have skyrocketed under their energy policies, healthcare costs have skyrocketed under their healthcare policies, etc.)

Since they had complete control (Dumbocrat-controlled House under Nancy Pelosi, Dumbocrat-controlled Senate under Harry Reid, and Dumbocrat-controlled White House under Barack Obama & Joe Biden), they fast-tracked this nation to hell with liberal policy and the misery & failure has been unmatched in US history. After 4 years, their "blame Bush" strategy grew old and tried. They they switched to "hey - those guys over there on the right are racist' - and that too has grown old and tired. Especially given that all of the racism in US history has come from the left. It was Abraham Lincoln and the GOP who fought to free the slaves while the racist dumbocrats adamantly opposed it.

Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, Colin Powell’s chief of staff during his time as secretary of state, decried John Sununu’s comment that Powell only endorsed Barack Obama because they are both black. “To say that Colin Powell would endorse President Obama because of his skin color is like saying Mother Teresa worked for profit,” Wilkerson told Ed Schultz.

Wilkerson said on The Ed Show that though he respects Sununu, a top Romney adviser and surrogate, “I don’t have any respect for the integrity of the position that he seemed to codify. Look at me, Ed, I’m white. I’m not black. Colin Powell picked me because of the content of my character and my competence.”

He added that he thinks Sununu’s remark was an “unfortunate slip of words,” but that it speaks to larger problem in the Republican party.
