Egypt Erupts!...

Scores injured and arrested in fresh Egypt clashes
4 May 2012 - Soldiers used water cannons and tear gas, the BBC's Jon Leyne reports
One soldier is reported to have been killed and hundreds of people hurt in fresh clashes between Egyptian security forces and protesters in Cairo. Soldiers used water cannons and tear gas outside the defence ministry. Dozens of people have been arrested and a night-time curfew is now in force. Protesters later dispersed and some joined a protest in Tahrir Square. On Wednesday, unidentified assailants attacked protesters outside the ministry, leaving at least 20 dead. The protesters, who were demonstrating against the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (Scaf), accused the government of orchestrating the attack.

The BBC's Jon Leyne, who was at Friday's demonstration, said trouble flared when protesters ignored army warnings not to approach the ministry. They tried to break through a protective ring of barbed wire and soldiers responded with water cannons and tear gas. Both sides threw rocks at the other in clashes that lasted several hours. Later the health ministry said one soldier had been killed and about 300 people wounded. It says about 130 are being treated in hospital. The army says proceedings against those arrested have already started in military courts. The unrest comes just three weeks before presidential elections are due to be held - the first since Hosni Mubarak was forced to step down.

Islamists blamed

Earlier on Friday, thousands once again gathered in Tahrir Square - the focus of the uprising that ousted President Mubarak in February 2011 - to protest against the Scaf. The crowd expressed their anger at the generals' failure to protect the demonstration on Wednesday and reiterated the demand that they hand over power to a civilian administration immediately, rather than after the presidential election. In the afternoon, protesters began walking from Tahrir Square to the defence ministry in the capital's Abbasiya district, several kilometres to the north-west.

The protesters started throwing stones and clashes then broke out. At one point, soldiers broadcast a message on loud-hailers saying the defence ministry would only be stormed over their dead bodies, and that reinforcements were on the way. A senior general later appeared on television to announce a night-time curfew around the defence ministry. State television blamed the Muslim Brotherhood for the trouble, despite the fact that the Islamist movement has been urging its supporters to stay away. Clashes also happened between protesters and security forces in Egypt's second city of Alexandria on Friday.

May 04, 2012 - Egyptian troops have fired tear gas and water cannons at tens of thousands of protesters who rallied near the Defense Ministry in Cairo demanding an immediate end to military rule.
Officials say one soldier was killed and nearly 300 people were injured Friday. More than 170 people also were arrested by the military just weeks before the landmark presidential elections. Earlier, Egypt's ruling military council announced a curfew in the area surrounding the Defense Ministry where mostly Islamist protesters have been camping for days.

The violence comes two days after fighting in Cairo left at least 11 people dead and more than 100 wounded, and prompted the two top Islamist candidates for the presidency to suspend their campaigns. Egypt's presidential election is scheduled for May 23 and 24. The military rulers have vowed the elections will be fair. The election will be the first since a popular uprising ousted longtime autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak more than a year ago.

The military council that took over from Mubarak has promised a democratic transition and transfer of power to an elected president by July 1. But Egypt's generals have faced strong domestic criticism for their handling of that process, which has been plagued by periodic eruptions of deadly violence, often surrounding anti-government protests in major cities.

Islamists are angered by the ruling military's decision to bar ultraconservative Islamist cleric Hazem Abu Ismail from standing in the presidential contest. Egypt's election commission disqualified Abu Ismail because his mother had taken joint U.S. citizenship.

I'm sure you'd rather have a nice, neat dictatorship...
You mean a secular ruler like Jordan's King, who is friendly with the West, rather than Islamist lunatics, like Hezbollah, Taliban, Iran, or Hamas? Is that a trick question? Duh.

my cousin the king of Jordan? NO DICTATOR! Iran is next, if Obama gets another term. No asshole Pubs PLEASE!!
Obama is only good at removing those who are our allies. So far the ball-less bullshit artist for president hasn't been able to influence the removal of any of our real enemies such as Iran, N. Korea, Syria. Plus, he's made things even worse for the US in Afganistan. Obama is a disaster domestically and internationally.

You are clueless. He got Russia and China to join against Iran Nuclear bombs for the first time, Syria is falling. Fuck dictators, fascist swine. LOL Fuck pubs.

Egypt goes back to the 7th Century. Way to go President Obama. What a disaster this president has been, on all levels.

Russia and China both vetoed the Syria resolution, which gave Syria the green light to initiate the mass slaughter of it's citizens, using Syrian army tanks and aircraft. Last I checked Iran was full steam ahead towards a nuclear bomb, using Russian technology and Chinese as one of their oil customers. And N. Korea is more belligerent than ever in recent history. This president is in it way over his head.

Talk about clueless!

Interesting to note, when he apologized to the Muslim world in Cairo, he had Mubarek at his side, heralding him as a great Arab leader and peacemaker. About a year later Mubarek was yet another one of Obama's "under the bus" betrayals. If a person can throw his own grandmother that helped raise him, under the bus, then no one is really off limits. I wouldn't trust this President as far as I can spit.

Is this cleric a member of the Muslim Brotherhood or supported by them? Just wondering since Obama has changed the rule and is now treating the MB like a valid government and is willing to work with them.

The OP's evidence of failure is a chump muslim cleric- only the fear mongering Pub Propaganda machine blares about the fool...Pub dupes! Corrupt dictator lovers! Feq you...tyvm

The "Arab Spring" started with Iraq.

It hasn't been long enough to rewrite history, but right wing morons try anyway. Did they think we could forget after only a few years. I bet some even believe Obama invaded Afghanistan and caused the financial meltdown. Naw, not even they could be that stupid. Or could they?
