NASA's Earthly pursuits appeared to come easy to opponents, who pointed out that 1) Earth science is a founding principle of NASA, and 2) we won't be able to do very much future exploration of anything from a home planet which is completely destroyed.

“It’s not is there’s been a big increase from a baseline, it’s actually coming back from a major reduction that took place during the Bush Administration,”

Senator Cruz, (R) of Texas, became the new chair of the Senate's subcommittee on Space, Science, and Competitiveness when the Republican Party took control of the chamber in January.

Cruz drew headlines in January when he was made chair of the Senate space and science subcommittee despite a long history of climate change skepticism, including telling CNN in a February 2014 interview that there was no data to support the existence of climate change.

Since 2003, nearly 100 feet of beach next to the launch pads have been lost to sea level rise, according to CBS News. NASA is now spending $2.8 million on a new mile-long dune to protect the site's launch pads. Three more dunes are also planned.

This is what happens when America elects Republicans into leadership positions. You get the most ignorant people in the world in charge of America's science. One science committee has a guy in charge who doesn't believe in evolution. Then you have Ted Cruz. And the GOP wonders why the world laughs at them.

Yeah, those freaking Republicans want to breathe dirty air, drink dirty water and believe that climate change is cyclical and has been happening throughout the known history of Mother Earth as far as humans are able to trace it back.

Republicans and science.......

When the facts disagree with your conclusions, stop the collection of facts

Yeah, demanding that the NASA stick to studying SPACE is totally unreasonable.

What better way to study the earth?
OMG! Who stopped the shuttle program? That program was a good way to study the earth from orbit. Exclusively relying on deep space exploration - what I fully support - will not provide the data necessary for earth studies about climate change, will it?

how about we just de-fund NASA as the huge waste of time and money that it IS, and the Military along with it, along with foreign aid, welfare, SS, 90% of gov't. How about just "letting " us KEEP our salaries, all of it and govt function on money from voluntary payments and lotteries. ? if govt can't so fund itself, then reduce size and scope of govt until it CAN get by without forcing people to pay for it. Anyone who argues against this is either a parasite in some way, or a wannabe Hitler.

Or someone arguing with this understands the need for some gov't infrastructure to maintain a 21st century society.

Yes, cut the spending a great deal. But doing away with taxes altogether is never going to happen. Get used to it.

You mean the 40 year old shuttle program that no other President sought to modernize?

I guess you want to be able to use decent roads, have groceries and good delivered to stores on those roads, have cops to prevent crime from overtaking society, have reasonable accurate weather forecasting, have your food inspected to maintain health standards, have products that are reasonably safe, and other things the gov't supports, but you don't want to have to spend a dime for it? Yeah, that would be living as a parasite.

"May a sick yak make bubbles in your hottub Mr. Cruz."

...And for myself, thanks Johnny, may you catch flesh-eating bacteria as a result and die screaming.

There are legitimate functions of government and one of those is the defense of the country. Why, you ask?
Because: "Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not."

There is a difference between defense and going out and looking for countries to attack.

See? At least we can agree on that.
