I think they fear that he might energize part of his base against one or several of them, as some Trump idiots did with Heller yesterday and were shut down today. But yeah, Trump's irrelevant in terms of what actual legislation the gop congress wants, and Ryan and McConnell never saw Trump as anything other than a hand that could sign a bill into law. But, the gop in an ungovernable body. So, unless Ryan or McConnell are prepared to pass something with a bipartisan mixture, with the edges of each party saying no, we're not going to see much for the next three years. And I don't see the dems taking either Chamber in 18.

Since high ranking democrats have refused to release details of their conversations with the assassin, you can make a case that it was the democrat party that radicalized a quasi socialist left wing nut case and encouraged him to shoot and murder conservative congresspeople. I just don't see Ryan surviving that. The Freedom Caucus is immune from any Trump bullying. You cannot get more socially or fiscally extreme than them. I'm not saying they're all terrible people, but if Bannon game into one of their districts looking for a fight, his fat corpse would never even be found.

But all this presupposes Trump actually having some plan or policy. I have no doubt he sincerely thinks America has been 'weak," in all kinds of stuff, or that he thought he could be some kind of deal maker. He's not 100% venal. But he didn't expect to win, and he's certainly not attempting to broaden his base. He's going to be 74, and seems quite happy to be making millions of the 35-40% of suckers.

bendog, if you mean surviving as Speaker, you may be right. But he can stave off a freedom caucus pull down through the end of the year if he promises them, although they lose on health care, they will win on tax reform. Ryan is smart to enough if the GOP fouls up health care, the GOP is in for a very tough ride. Trump is not running so he does not have coat tails to ride. What has been working to an extent is tying the Dem candidates to Pelosi. If the dems overthrow Pelosi for a moderate house leader, who knows how it will all turn out.
