Rep. Upton pushed for loan to now-bankrupt solar company

Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich), a leading GOP critic of the Obama administration’s loans to Solyndra, pressed the Energy Department in 2009 to back a Michigan solar firm that filed for bankruptcy this week.
In a Dec. 2009 letter to Energy Secretary Steven Chu, Upton and the rest of the Michigan delegation pressed the department to issue loan guarantees for a slew of energy projects. Included on the list was United Solar Ovonic, which was seeking a taxpayer-backed loan guarantee to produce rooftop solar panels.

“We believe these applications are worthy of serious consideration by the Energy Department,” the Michigan lawmakers wrote in the letter.

Upton’s letter underscores the fact that Republicans, many of whom have pummeled the administration over the Solyndra controversy, pressed the Energy Department to back clean-energy projects in their home states.

United Solar’s parent company, Energy Conversion Devices (ECD), filed for bankruptcy Tuesday. In a statement, ECD said United Solar filed its own separate bankruptcy petition. ECD said it plans to sell United Solar, but the company will continue to operate during the sale.

Upton, the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has led a months-long investigation of the Obama administration’s 2009 loan guarantee to Solyndra, the California solar panel maker that filed for bankruptcy in September.

did the loan to the Michigan solar firm go through, after being pushed by Rep. Upton? If so, then it would be HIS Solyndra, not the GOP's.

If not, then your point is moot.

I don't think they got an Energy Dept. loan, but they DID get $13 mil in stimulus...

He is the GOP's Representative, leading the House Energy committee.

1 GOP rep does not make the entire GOP. However, 1 President Obama DOES make the Obama administration.

You're comparing apples to bananas.

He. Was. Chairman.

That means he represented Republican interests for that committee.

Are you really this stupid?

C'mon Synth, he was representing his STATE...

A state Representative fighting for his state.

That is outrageous.

Oh wait.

No.

That's what the people of the state elect representatives to do.

So, Synthia is an idiot... and the OP is a fail.

If the gubmint is handing out monies I'm not surprised reps will pull to get some for their constituency. Which is exactly why govt. has no place picking winners and losers, bailing out insolvent firms, subsidizing others or heavily regulating and doling incentives for certain concessions.

They simply need to do the job that was given to them. Uphold the constitution, keep the money sound and govern little.

There is a difference between representing an entire administration which tries (and achieved) to push through a questionable loan for a company that the previous administration had financial doubts about...

and being the committee chair and pushing for (and failing to get) a loan for a company that later goes under.

Are you really this stupid?

Now, if you can show us that the Michigan company had financial questions and the Obama administration knew about it and the Republican Rep pushed for the loan anyway, then you might have at least a similarity of situations. Right now, you got bubkus.

Politicians push for goodies for their districts. The label on the politician is not important.... both sides can with justification point out the errors of the other's ways in this regard.

Can we at least agree now that there is not enough of a market for this stuff and have a bipartisan agreement to stop the stupid?

The issue with Solyindra is that people give contributions in exchange for subsidies for rotten business models. If we can get agreement that giving taxpayer money to campaign contributors is wrong, then we make progress. If we just go "neener neener, your side is just as bad or worse" then they see we are not serious and they just keep doing it

Not even CLOSE. The ONLY reason Solyndra failed was because the Chinese government heavily subsidized their own solar industry, undercutting the price to the point that Solyndra could not compete.

FACT!

WHAT?? A President paying back campaign contributors under the guise of 'green energy', even though it was common knowledge that the businesses that received his largesse were failures from the get go.

If you don't see that you should stand in front of the mirror and repeat 'Moron' until you figure it out.

The difference of course being fighting for your country vs fighting for your friends at the expense of your country. Obama did not represent the voters when he invested in Solyndra. A state rep surely represents his state when he lobbies for a program to bring jobs to his state. See the difference?

Nope?
That's becuse you are a partisan, its ok, most are.
