Republicans: Bullshitting about Death Panels in Plain Sight

False Euthanasia Claims | FactCheck.org

Boehner/McCotter statement, July 23: Section 1233 of the House-drafted legislation encourages health care providers to provide their Medicare patients with counseling on “the use of artificially administered nutrition and hydration” and other end of life treatments, and may place seniors in situations where they feel pressured to sign end of life directives they would not otherwise sign. This provision may start us down a treacherous path toward government-encouraged euthanasia if enacted into law.

We can’t argue with Boehner’s claim that counseling “may” cause more seniors to refuse treatment such as artificial nutrition and hydration, but we see no evidence that it will. There’s certainly no requirement in the bill that seniors decline life support or extraordinary measures of medical treatment.
Furthermore, seniors have had control over the end-of-life issues the Republicans are concerned about for a long time. California first legally ratified the use of advance directives like living wills in 1976, and the 1990 Patient Self-Determination Act mandated patients’ rights to decide what degree of intervention they prefer.

Though there are still controversies over what care patients should be allowed to refuse and under what circumstances, the fact is that the right to refuse care is nothing new.

As for the argument claiming that this is the first step on a slippery slope leading to government-encouraged euthanasia, that’s a stretch. The right to draw up an advance directive is federally guaranteed, but doctor-assisted suicide is legal in only three states. It would take a lot more than Medicare-funded counseling for voluntary euthanasia to become a standard government recommendation.

The original author of this part of the legislation responded to Boehner’s and McCotter’s statement on the House floor, saying that "nothing could be further from the truth." The section under question was based on a stand-alone piece of legislation sponsored by Democratic Rep. Earl Blumenauer of Oregon and Republican Rep. Charles Boustany of Louisiana. Three more Democrats and another Republican cosponsored the legislation. On July 24, Blumenauer expressed his "disappointment" in Boehner’s misinterpretation of the bipartisan bill:

Now where have I heard that name Charles Boustany before.

Oh right..

I love how the Republicans followed Obama with Senator Foghorn Leghorn from Swamptown, Miss.

When did wide collars come back in????

I am more concerned about MY constitutional rights of privacy. Giving the Government cart blanche access to the PRIVATE MEDICAL FILES of every US CITIZEN....is a far greater breech of rights to every citizen than the patriot act ever dreamed of being......the potential for corruption is beyond imagination.

The congress of these United States has sworn an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States from all enemies....both foreign and DOMESTIC. Just where are the liberal outcries and threats of law suits from the ACLU on this obvious breech of Constitutional Law? FREE is never really free.......are you willing to sell your rights for that FREE CARROT dangled in front of your nose.....presented by this power grabbing megalomanic?

This is what happens when the referees are allowed to suit up and PLAY in the game instead of simply making a level playing field for the players....as was the intent when the federal government was founded to regulate interstate commerce and infrastructure. Just where does congress grasp the Constitutional Authority to seize this private industry or even inject their power therein? They have the authority to regulate it.....not become a care giver....under the pretense of PUBLIC WELFARE.....unless many of the states BILL OF RIGHTS and AMENDMENTS are totally IGNORED.

But the "barry" has already declared that both our society and Constitution are DEEPLY FLAWED....even today. Never realizing that it was that same constitution and society made up of we the PEOPLE that amended this LIVING Document known as the CONSTITUTION that made the trade and traffic of human flesh....illegal, by the FREE WILL declaration thereof.......with a mandated 3/4 majority ratification from WE THE PEOPLE....STATES. This modern Flawed Document and Society has granted him the right to be the first black president in history.....is that the FLAW in our society and Constitution of which he is addressing? Just how many hundreds of thousands members of society had to bleed and die in the Civil War......just so this communist could TAKE a great big SHIT...right where he eats and sleeps? He is a hypocrite to both his heritage and COUNTRY. It is people such as him that keep Big Brother Al and his church of never ending bigotry in business.......they have made an industry of power and money by playing the race card.......and the young black men and women of this nation are the ones they are taking advantage of.

Republicans are saying the Democrats are trying to kill Grandma with Death Panels except that whole part of the bill was part of a separate bill that was cosponsored by the man who did the Republican response last night.

If that's not bullshitting in plain sight, I'm not sure what is.

My friend, not only do you need to research and understand the realities of the European and Canadian models of government healthcare, but, you certainly need to understand how and why they got to where they are. Better yet, I have a few elderly family members in Europe who would be pleased to change places with you, to help you understand.

Or I have a cousin who is a transplant surgeon in the UK who could explain it to you. He has no problem sharing with me that the last thing we want to do is go to the overkill level of a one payer government system.

Then maybe you could understand why some would choose to use the exaggerated term "Death Panels" to explain the reality of such systems, which are proven by real life human suffering.

But then again, you can just keep your head in the sand and expect the government to always put your best interest first!

Good Luck!
