"Just when House Republicans are about to provoke a new budget war, one of their own members has broken ranks and proposed a tax increase on the rich. Representative Rick Crawford, a freshman Republican from Arkansas, says the only serious way to begin cutting the deficit is to combine new tax revenue with spending cuts. On Thursday, he introduced a bill calling for a 5 percent surtax on incomes exceeding $1 million.

Mr. Crawford was immediately vilified by Grover Norquist, the antitax vigilante, who said the plan would violate a no-new-tax pledge he signed when running for office. Mr. Crawford faces significant Democratic opposition in the fall and is clearly betting that agreeing to a widely popular tax increase will be more important to his voters than sticking with a foolish, lockstep pledge."

"Crawford was born in the Homestead Air Force Base in Florida, the son of Ruth Anne and Donny J. "Don" Crawford. Crawford grew up in a military family. His father served in the United States Air Force. He graduated from Alvirne High School in Hudson, New Hampshire. He enlisted in the Army, where he served as a bomb disposal technician for four years, while advancing to the rank of Sergeant. After his service, he attended Arkansas State University and graduated in 1996 with a B.S. in Agriculture Business and Economics."

If tax increases on the rich and corporations is the answer, then explain California. They have the highest tax rates over a vast majority of states, including corporate taxes, and under the control of a Democrat legislature, yet where is that states budget today? Problem?

Btw, this guy is only arguing for it for "deficit reduction", not to actually fund anything going on now.

IOW, fuck him, as far as I'm concerned.

Someone also needs to tell Democrats just raising taxes on the rich will accomplish nothing you have to have serious spending cuts along with it and everything has to be on the table.

Cut spending first then we will go from there. It's a known fact the government raises taxes but never seems to cut spending.

How any real representative of the United States can sign a pledge like that is so idiotic.
Without having the sense to keep any options open it is a sign of someone bought and paid for by someone. It really has no place in the halls of our capital.

Where have you been the last decade, for that matter the past 30 years.
Seems you are a norquist croonie.

When everything goes on the table democrats become fleebaggers. Pelosi did it for a photo op during the attempt at fixing SS Since, democrats have only harmed it but cutting that revenue stream.

And did said bill include spending cuts?

I have been watching both parties run up a 15 trillion dollar debt and counting by repeating the same old talking points over and over the left's answer to everything is tax the rich the right's is tax cuts if you think either party has made any effort to move from those standard party lines you have been wearing those partisan glasses to long.

Republicans need to tell Norquist to shove his pledge up his lobbyist ass.
How much-more-appropriate than a combat-vet telling him??!!!

Aw, jeez.....a Republican (governor) hands-off a state, in financial-straights....and, the Dem gets the blame.

Gee.....where have I heard that scenario, before?

If republicans were actually fiscally responsible they would have cut spending on everything and then passed the savings on to billionaires. Doing it backwards as they did shows the real aim of their fiscal policy, shifting the tax burden downward and down the road.

Gee....whatta profound-concept.

Who's arguing against cuts?

Crawford is an idiot. He's going to lose badly for this. I hope he's primaried out.

They were having problems BEFORE the Republican governor took over, and in case you forgot he still had to work with a Democrat legislature. Have you studied the roles of government before? Who passes laws on tax increases and votes on spending cuts? Who can override a veto? Do you need an educated hint?

Nope.

We already KNOW what works!!!!!

"Not only was the entire national deficit eliminated after raising taxes on the wealthy in 1993, but the economy grew so fast for the remainder of the decade that many conservative economists thought that the Fed should raise the prime interest rate in order to slow it down."
