Report: US searched Iranian ship suspected of smuggling arms to Hamas

The US military intercepted and searched an Iranian-owned ship that officials feared was carrying arms to the militant group Hamas, but two officials said it was unclear Thursday whether those suspicions were justified.

The Cypriot-flagged commercial vessel was tracked by a US Navy ship in the Red Sea over the weekend, one official said. It was boarded and searched with the consent of the vessel's crew on Monday and Tuesday, said another.

They both spoke on condition of anonymity because details were still sketchy and they were not authorized to speak about it on the record.

One official said the two-day search turned up ammunition that included artillery shells, and since Hamas is not known to use artillery, officials are now uncertain who the intended recipient was.

It's not just the US, the 27 member nations of the EU have pledged to do the same thing. They all recognize that Israel's legitimate security needs requires that the rearming of Hamas be ended and that the only alternative to stopping the ships bringing weapons from Iran is for Israel to fully occupy Gaza again. Of course, an added benefit for the US is that this coalition focuses attention on Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism and heightens the fear that if Iran is allowed to acquire nuclear weapons they may well end up in the hands of terrorists in other places.

Israel is only very much hated by the muslim world, all other countries on earth really haven't got problems with Israel. They only have problems with civilian casualties, destruction of UN building by Israel. You seem to have an image that the world hates Israel, but in general this is not true. Even Turkey had very good relation with Israel before the recent Gaza conflict.

What is true however is that the world does not like Hamas, nobody recognizes it.
