The university and its students should prefer improving today's orthodoxies to imposing them on our forebears," Mr Abbott told the Independent newspaper.

"The university should remember that its mission is not to reflect fashion but to seek truth and that means striving to understand before rushing to judge."

The Tricolour is a “violent” symbol, comparable to the Nazi swastika, says Oxford University student activist
The law graduate behind a controversial campaign to remove a statue of British colonialist Cecil Rhodes from Oxford University’s Oriel College has turned his attention to the French flag, saying he’d support its ban on all university campuses.

Ntokozo Qwabe, co-founder of Rhodes Must Fall in Oxford, says France has committed acts of terror and refused to concede that Isis is worse than the French state.

"I do NOT stand with France. Not while it continues to terrorise and bomb Afrika [sic] & the Middle East for its imperial interests."

Cecil Rhodes was basically a liberal who often disagreed with the Transvaal government's racist policies and he tried to overthrow the Boer government. Rhodes should be praised for standing up to the Boers, who were ultimately responsible for creating an apartheid state comparable to Nazi Germany, after South Africa became a self-governing colony, upon which London could not exercise its civilising influence. Black people tend to see all whites as racists but there are several degrees of racism from soft colonialism to white supremacy.
