McCain is a gambler and since Religious Right are suppose to hate that they will forget its a sin in their eyes and move on. That incredibly fat POS Bill Bennett is a Fox news contributor, btw

A lifelong gambler, Mr. McCain takes risks, both on and off the craps table. He was throwing dice that night not long after his failed 2000 presidential bid, in which he was skewered by the Republican Party’s evangelical base, opponents of gambling. Mr. McCain was betting at a casino he oversaw as a member of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, and he was doing so with the lobbyist who represents that casino, according to three associates of Mr. McCain.

The visit had been arranged by the lobbyist, Scott Reed, who works for the Mashantucket Pequot, a tribe that has contributed heavily to Mr. McCain’s campaigns and built Foxwoods into the world’s second-largest casino. Joining them was Rick Davis, Mr. McCain’s current campaign manager. Their night of good fortune epitomized not just Mr. McCain’s affection for gambling, but also the close relationship he has built with the gambling industry and its lobbyists during his 25-year career in Congress.

As a two-time chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee, Mr. McCain has done more than any other member of Congress to shape the laws governing America’s casinos, helping to transform the once-sleepy Indian gambling business into a $26-billion-a-year behemoth with 423 casinos across the country. He has won praise as a champion of economic development and self-governance on reservations.

“One of the founding fathers of Indian gaming” is what Steven Light, a University of North Dakota professor and a leading Indian gambling expert, called Mr. McCain.

As factions of the ferociously competitive gambling industry have vied for an edge, they have found it advantageous to cultivate a relationship with Mr. McCain or hire someone who has one, according to an examination based on more than 70 interviews and thousands of pages of documents.

I support Obama and all, but so what? Why is this a bad thing? Supporting Indian Gambling Casinos helped create jobs. Indians are Americans too, right? I don't understand why the new york times would make a big deal out of McCain and gambling. I play poker... I gamble. What's the big deal?

Because this whole election and this messageboard is filled with stupid ass insignificant bits of info like this. It's fricken annoying.

OJ's right.

The fundies have to dump The Gambler and start supporting The Infanticide Merchant.

It's what Jesus would do.

You don't understand why the NY Times would TRY to make a big deal out of this? Oh please tell me you are a bit wiser than that. Maybe you can figure out why the NY Times ignores Obama's decades long ties to domestic terrorists and chose to go with this one as if it were FAR more important for its readers to know. No? Any Republican can explain why the NY Times chose to go with one of these stories while always ignoring the other. Do you think the NY Times might have decided its readers needed to know if it had been McCain with decades long ties to domestic terrorists and ignore it if Obama shot craps in an Indian casino on occasion? You bet.

The only way I'd care about whether McCain shot craps or not is if he lost the family fortune doing it. Since he hasn't and hasn't even come close to doing so -the fact the NY Times printed this as if MILLIONS of Americans were going to go into a dead faint because he goes to a casino now and then should tell you more about that rag NY Times, than it tells you anything about McCain. This is what is called a "character assassination" story and has no more meaning than that.

Ooh, I share your heartfelt and sincerely held OUTRAGE that McCain actually gambles on occasion. How dare that guy and how hypocritical of the man after he campaigned against allowing casinos on Indian reservations. Oh wait -you mean he didn't? Then what the F*** do you care if the man shoots craps now and then? Any skin off your nose? His wife complain about it to you or something?

What's the matter -afraid the man might beat Obama because you know he is actually far more qualified for the job than a novice Senator of a few months and have to fall back on hoping to slime the guy on irrelevant crap like this?

Do you think it means if the religious right find out McCain goes to a casino now they will flock to vote for someone who think it is a "right" to slaughter the innocent instead? YOU might want to re-check the Bible about which of those two sins is considered so offensive to God that the religious right believe it is covered by a commandment -and which isn't. Talk about a newspaper that doesn't even understand its target audience for a character assassination story. LOL

Look how angry you conservatives are. I feel bad for you. I mean, the gambling story about McCain isn't a big deal, but look at you guys. All of you are in a bigger uproar than Democrats are. If it isn't a big deal that McCain gambles, then why are you so angry? The New York Times has posted another anti-Republican article? Come on - that's old news. Most Americans won't care either way about it... but look at you guys, you attack Obama with such tenacity, such vigor... it's as if you know the election is lost already. You know what you to do someone who is insignificant? You don't pay attention to them. You make threads about how wonderful John McCain is.

Can you tell me why John McCain wants to make the government lose out on $300 billion and he's basing his entire campaign off of $18 billion? Shouldn't it be the other way around? $300 billion - he wants to cut taxes by. $300 billion when the government is spending $700 billion. Come on.

4 more years of McCain's fundamentalism and Eruope will break relations with the United States. I'm not joking. We're hated all over the world because of what Bush has done.

Why are we in Iraq if the country is virtually at peace? Yeah, suicide bombings still happen there, but they also happen in Syria. Are we going to invade Syria now? What about Pakistan? They're mostly happening in Iraq because we're there. We leave, the suicide bombings mostly stop. Why are we NOT increasing the amount of troops in Afghanistan?

I agree, this whole thing about gambling is irrelevant unless McCain is pocketing some of the money from gambling casinos. I doubt he is because he has all of the money he could ever want from his wife, Cindy.
