There are many well publicized problems with consuming too much refined sugar, but there is one side effect that doesn't get much attention: brittle bones. Why do so many Americans have bad knees, hips, back, lots of broken bones? The incidence of bone and joint related problems is extremely high in America. Why? Part of the answer is we eat a ton of sugar. The chemical reaction that occurs in your body each time you drink a can of soda (for example) results in calcium leeching out of your bones.

"Aug 30, 2007 - The sugar caused a significant increase in the amount of calcium that was excreted in the urine, giving evidence to the theory that sugar robs the bones of the calcium since 99 percent of the bodys calcium is stored in the bones.
