"These are the values inspiring those brave workers in Poland. . . They remind us that where free unions and collective bargaining are forbidden, freedom is lost. They remind us that freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. You and I must protect and preserve freedom here or it will not be passed on to our children."

- Ronald Reagan, Labor Day speech, 9/01/80

Poland: Solidarity -- The Trade Union That Changed The World

"Some 17,000 workers seized control of the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk to protest, among other things, a recent rise in food prices. Their leader, Lech Walesa, had narrowly avoided arrest by secret police that morning, and had managed to scale the shipyard gate and join the workers inside. Soon, workers in 20 other area factories joined the strike in solidarity.

Seventeen days later, after negotiations with Poland's Communist government, the burly, mustachioed Walesa appeared before the workers in the shipyard with an historic message: "We have an independent, self-governing trade union! [crowd cheers] We have the right to strike!"

Walesa and Poland's first deputy prime minister, Mieczyslaw Jagielski, had signed a deal granting the workers their main demands: the right to organize freely and to strike. Those were rights accorded under conventions by the International Labor Organization, of which Poland was a signatory. But this was the first time that any Communist government had put them into practice..."

Chris? Context is everything. Deal with it.

30 years ago, I could smoke in a McDonalds.

Knowledge isn't static.

How does "context" affect the fact that the father of modern conservatism is clearly advocating in favor of unions and collective bargaining?

Either Reagan was right and collective bargaining is essential for the preservation of freedom or he was a typical political hack using current headlines for personal political gain, regardless of his true feelings. Either way, it's a telling story.

And either way, he's dead.

30 years ago, Hussein was in power, and Gadaffi was our friend (and his name wasn't Gadaffi).

Communist Dick-tater, Conservative Dick-tater, Religious Dick-tater... What's your point?

What does it mean that Ronald Reagan is on record advocating unions and collective bargaining? Is the god of American Conservatism right, or was he a typical political hack with no scruples beyond making his own dime at the time?

He was wise IN HIS TIME.

He would be wise IN OUR TIME as well.

But he didn't live in OUR TIME.

His time was 30 YEARS AGO.

The book linked was published 20 years ago... many would argue that Reagan could EASILY be in this list if it were republished today.

Doesn't matter. I'm still taxed unfairly because of his trickle down theory.

Bullshit is bullshit, and PROFITABLE bullshit bridges political time.

Hmmm...That Reagan guy sounds wikhed smaht. I think the current batch of so-called conservatism sounds a bit different

"We must close union offices, confiscate their money and put their leaders in prison. We must reduce workers salaries and take away their right to strike."

s0n.........let me tell you soemthing. You gotta move out of that thatched cottage you live in and take some courses in how to read tea leaves. Assholes with your political orientations are getting ball kicked on a daily basis in America these days. Its not even debatable. Check the mega amounts of red on the last elections map. Its called rejection of far left ideology.

PATCO ring a bell with you at all?

Yep, it sure does. PATCO wasn't exactly union-busting. The union had previously agreed to certain requirements, partly reneged and had their bluff called.

Public sector employees should NEVER be able to collectively bargain because it leaves us (the tax paying employer) out of the equation.... THAT REAGAN NEVER ENDORSED!

But as some are so fond of pointing out, Reagan couldn't be a republican today. They'd call him a Rino.

Whenever the rich and powerful want to consolidate their power, the first thing they do is abolish the unions.

And so it is today...

There's nothing wrong with public sector employees bargaining collectively as long as the elected officials that they bargain with are given a message that they work for the tax payers and not for those who lobby for either labor OR industry.

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater - elect leaders instead of politicians.

The problem is not unionization per se, the problem is the short-sighted, limp-dick son's-o'-bitches we've had negotiating for the tax payers.

Another option is to let teachers bill the system like doctors on a per child / per procedure basis from private facilities.
