What to do?

What's the holdup, Charlie?

Emboldened by the Democrats' newly bolstered majority in the House, Rep. Charles Rangel doubtless anticipates siccing his Ways & Means Committee on the nation's financial mess.

But what about his own financial mess?

The one being probed by the House Ethics Committee?

Rangel in September said he would hire a "forensic accountant" (think: "CSI: Charlie") to untangle a 20-year morass of tax returns and to determine just how much money he's made and how much in unpaid taxes he may still owe.

(Reminder: Rangel's committee writes the nation's tax laws.)

But as The Post's Isabel Vincent reported, two months later Rangel's lawyers claim they can't locate a single qualified firm that hasn't contributed to Rangel's campaigns or has no pending business before Ways & Means.

The same lawyers, incidentally, have already been paid more than $121,000 from Rangel's campaign committee.

Generally, that's a no-no. And though Rangel's staff insists he got a required advance OK from the Federal Elections Commission, the FEC says otherwise: An agency spokeswoman insists that neither Rangel nor anyone representing him even asked for a determination....

This doesn't surprise me.

There appears to be a derth of poor members of Congress, doesn't there?

Rangel Hires Accountant to Scrub Tax Returns

Embattled House Ways & Means Chair Charles Rangel has hired an accounting firm to scrub his tax returns to look for additional errors:
*Associated Press
*The Hill
*New York Post
*New York Times
*NY1
I wonder if the accounting firm will charge less than Lanny Davis and the tax lawyers at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe -- $120,000, paid for by Rangel's election committee (in possible violation of rules prohibiting the use of campaign funds for personal purposes):
*American Lawyer
*New York Post

Rangel survived the 2008 elections....unbelievable. The people in his district must suffer from extreme brain damage to still vote for this loser. The same for the people in Murtha's district (you know..the bitter racist rednecks who cling to religion and guns).
