R.I.P. Internet Poker

Bullshit...People are gambling, no matter how much the nanny statists tell them not to.

It's their money and time...If the want to spend them on games of chance, smoking weed or in the company of hookers, it's no skin off my ass.
I'm not saying people shouldn't gamble -- or smoke weed or patronize hookers. All of that is fine with me and I oppose government prohibiting any of those activities as strongly as you do. But that is not the issue. The issue is government cracking down on "fixed" Internet gambling. Cheating. Fraud.

I approve of government doing that.

Once again, you are spot on.

There is a difference between the government cracking down on online gambling, period, and the government cracking down on crooked online gambling. Although the article quoted in the OP does not make it as clear as it could, it seems to me that, in this case, the government is attempting to prevent fraud in the conduct of online gambling, NOT trying to close down ALL online gambling.

That would be incorrect. These are legit poker sites and the only *crooked* part is that the government wasn't getting its piece of the pie.

Hell---you still can gamble like hell on the market. Quit bitchin.

It used to be a free country until the moral police.

As I read this, it isn't a matter of "moral policing." Fraud is a crime. Do you feel that people who commit fraud may be on solid moral ground and, therefore, any attempt to curtail them constitutes "moral policing"?

They aren't trying to stamp out gambling here - only CROOKED gambling.

Just all USA INTERNET gaming. They want you to burn up your USA dollars on Mega Millions Powerball and scratch-its to fund their programs.

PokerStars is up and running fine for everyone outside the USA, the site's off about 35% down about 40,000 players. This is only a USA issue on how you were able to make a deposit into the site living in the USA.

The federal nannies strike again.
Why would you be critical of this intervention? People are being scammed and government is taking action on their behalf -- and it offends you? That seems to suggest you've been indoctrinated by neo-conservative influences and are responding reflexively.

Players are not being scammed. That wasn't the problem.

The problem is that the poker sites were surrepticiously allowing people to gamble online.

And in order to do that they were violating banking laws about moving money on and offshore.

U wondered how long it would take for the government to go after the bansters who were in on the game.

Personally I think online gambling ought to be legal.

But one can easily see how these gambling sites could easily become a tool for transferring wealth across national borders, too, so I totally understand why the FEDS got involved.

Log in to the domains. Alive and well. If there is one industry that has the resources to fight the Fed thugs, this is it.

Full Tilt .net is up.

Okay. If I misunderstood the circumstances I apologize.

If cheating and fraud are not the reason for the crackdown then I oppose government's action.

The sites are legit for fair gaming.

The fraud and money laundering charges are the only charges that may cause any issues, because thats how USA players were able to make a deposit. The US government says we can't play online poker, it's bad, very bad, but the Lotto, now thats good stiff, pick 6 random numbers out of 50, (I don't play Keno/bingo so I just guessing here) and you're an instant millinonare....

I bet there are civil forefeitures going on in this also. How many innocent people will have their funds seized and held and have to fight to get them back?
Who decides what is crooked gambling or not? Our government??
What we have here are some folks that lost $$ gambling and want government action.
I doubt any winners alleged fraud.

You would have to be a complete idiot to give your credit card info to something as shady as on-line poker.

Spoken like someone who has no idea how any of this works. Yet you still decided to state your opinion. Shocking.

You cant use any credit card for any gaming site in the USA, buy all the porn access you want, but cant play a game of HORSE, PLO or HLHE. The rest of the world can, but uncle sammy knows whats best for us, BUY LOTTO. For a while e-checks were an option to make a deposit, but that went away in February this year, so I read.

It's all about lost money, the guberment not getting a cut on any of it, watch online gaming come back, but with a cut going to the feds...
