I was thinking earlier about what qualifies someone to be President.

I am not talking issues here. I am talking about what type of person would they have to be to be a good President.

So I figure we should make a list. Ill start.

I think the most important characteristic in any sort of leader is Integrity. Unfortunately, due to the nature of our political system and human nature its the toughest to find.

I'll suggest the following are things I expect to see in a POTUS

Competence, honesty, ability to work with people and to motivate them to your vision, compassion, bravery.

The ability to admit that you don't always have the answers and aren't always right

Experience in leadership in a prominent position in government or business. A willingness to uphold the ideals of America (freedom (and yes that includes the freedom to fail as well as the freedom to succeed), individual liberty, personal responsibility, defending our nation and our allies, competence, judgment (I.E. GOOD judgment into the types of people you have in support of you and as advisors to you), effort)... the funny thing is Obama has NONE of that... he believes in control over freedom, individual handouts at the expense of others, government taking care of your personal responsibilities, appeasing our enemies and leaving our allies out to dry, incompetence (as shown in beliefs in socialism and marxist ideals), and very poor judgement....

I want one who can fill a stadium night after night, preaching and promising.

Obama has none of that but McCain does?

McCain has the experience I'll give you that one. 26 years worth and at one time I might've agreed that he was the man for the job but his actions over the last 7 plus years indicate otherwise. He's steeped in policies of a failed administration and failed policies and he has no desire to change the direction we're headed in as a nation.

Individual liberty? would that include everyone or just the people the Repugs deems worthy of individual liberty? how about Freedom of Choice and Freedom to love who you want without discrimination? are those individual liberties? I always laugh when I see a Republican talk about less governement and more personal responsibility and freedom and in the same breath they say we need an constitutional amendement to ban gay marriages and that we need a consitutional amendement to ban abortions. Where is the personal freedom and responsibility when you are busy minding other people's business in those areas?

Defending out nation? Did Iraq attack us or any of our allies? No they did not. 15 of the 19 highjackers were Saudi yet Bush & Co are still right in bed with them. We let Bin Laden slip right through our fingers by taking our attention away from the real terror spot afghanistan. Bush made jokes about it too at a fundraiser looking under the table and podium saying "opps is he there? oh maybe he's there" Is that funny? Are we really safer today than we were before? are our borders protected? do we have enough military strength in this country that we could easily fend off an attack on our own shores or are they stretched so thin with 3rd and 4th tours in Iraq that we're actually weaker today and more vulnerable to attack?

Competence? like not knowing the difference betweena sunni an a shite muslim? like not even realizing your own wife and addicted to pain killer and stealing from her non-profit to feed her habit? Like voting 90% of the time for failed policies in order to advance your own political future?

judgement? Obama knew the war in Iraq was wrong he voted against it. McCain's judgement is clouded with a desire to be president more than a desire to do what is right for the common citizen in America, in fact he said he doesn't even agree with the majority of Americans (saddlebrook).

Obama believes in taking responsibility for yourself, working hard for your goals and in lifting up those who might need your help. Individual responsibility as well as a responsibility to those in your community because no one can do it alone. We aren't autonomous. We all have a responsibility to each other as people and citizens of this world.

I want a POTUS who will flip-flop and pander to religious fanatics, and give still more tax breaks to the richest people on earth.

That's why I'm voting for McSame.

The man has no principle he won't abandon if it might give him votes.

Fair enough--now just where is he going to draw the line between who needs taxpayer support and who doesn't ?

1) You have the freedom to love whomever you want. You do not have the freedom to redefine "marriage" for a limited radical agenda. I am all for equal inheritance, insurance, etc rights for gay couples who go and get a government recognized civil union, but it is not a marriage by definition.... Banning abortions except for the cases of extreme risk to the mother etc is ensuring the freedom of the innocent....

2) Iraq attacked Kuwait. Iraq violated the terms of cease fire that suspended the hostilities, thus justifying the actions taken that should have been finished LONG before. The continued battle against AlQ and radical terrorism DOES continue.

3) Funny.. I see McCain as a very competent leader, as he has continually shown, even if I do not agree with all of his stances. Obama has not shown himself to be a competent leader in any way.

4) Obama was wrong on Iraq. Obama's judgment in mentors and associations is questionable at BEST and shows ties to radicalism, marxism, criminality (Ayers), and socialism.

5) Obama does NOT believe in personal responsibility. The ONLY thing he has stated in this is that fathers should take care of their kids. Ooooooo, like that is not obvious. He is for a handout system based on marxist principles of wealth redistribution thru extremes of government control. He is all for, with his entitlement programs, taking away the responsibilities to take care of yourself, earning your own way, and living by the results of your own efforts. We can take care of our own personal responsibilities. We make ourselves, even if we are citizens of the country. We have the responsibility to live by the consequences of our personal actions and decisions. If we make decisions that lead us to a $10 an hour job, rather than a $100 an hour job, so be it. We have the right to fail that goes right in line with the right to succeed. That is what is known as personal freedom. I, nor anyone else, am not responsible for your personal well being or your financial place in life. If you are able bodied and able minded, it is up to YOU to provide for your own care, your own earnings, your own housing, your own doctor visits, etc. And no, we do not have a plethora of people in this country that CAN NOT take care of themselves. We have a plethora of people in this country that WILL NOT or CHOOSE not to do what is necessary to take care of themselves. If you want healthcare, do what is necessary to pay for it. Work a second job. Advance in your job skills to earn the higher position with benefits. Join the military or go to college for your training. Go the extra mile for your promotions. Hell, even a McDonalds worker moving up into shift manager can earn benefits, and lord knows that job does not require a knowledge of rocket science. We have the responsibility to take care of our own individual needs. The government does not and should not have that responsibility in our day to day lives.

I guess that leaves out Palin, then.

I will start with someone running for President that has a chance to live out 8 years, and not put a nobody in charge if he should die.

Just a thought. :eusa_whistle:

So what about if the odds are supposedly high that the person running for prez will likely have an attempt on their life?

What is the criteria you have for whether they will live out their term (which is 4 years, not 8)? Age? Medical history? Family history of age? Advances in medical treatment? Probability of the population overall on how long a person will live after making it to their current age? What??? Or is it simply because you have a hatred for McCain, as many of us truly suspect of you, considering your leftist stances with radical leanings?

Competing in beauty contest, helping family members by attacking their husbands and supporting anti-science education in schools I guess

hmmmmn .... interesting, comment. As an American I would think you would be more concerned about the health of a candidate, and not the possibility of another assassination. Good going, Bozo!

Well, Obama does want to be the next Kennedy, after all.

WOW!

Diamond, how do you come to the conclusion that Obama of all people doesn't believe in personal responsibility? He put himself through college on student loans and scholarships, he went back to his community and worked to help out workers who had lost their jobs, he seems to be everything that the Republican party should embrace, a self made man, hard worker, up by the boot straps kind of guy etc. he has said time and again it's about individual responsibility and working hard to reeach ones' full potential.

I guess some people just believe what fits into their narrow view of the world, even in the face of evidence to the contrary.

Someone who is really and willing to uphold the constitution. The Bush administration does not fit that ideal. I am glad they are leaving. Obama and McCain I believe would both do that.

I want someone who has shown that he will raise taxes on people making $42,000, while he gives great speeches about cutting taxes for the middle class. Furthermore, I want a real independent, one who has the audacity to launch his political career at the home of an unrepented terrorist. Lastly, I want someone who will protect this country by leaving Iraq in shambles(if Iraq isn't stable enough to fit his timeline), so that AQ can thrive.
