Qualcomm is readying its Halo wireless electric vehicle charging (WEVC) technology for a trial demonstration in London later this year and U.K.-based Delta Motorsport plans to integrate the system into its Delta E-4 Coupe electric cars for the demo, the companies said Tuesday.

Delta Motorsport, an automotive engineering consultancy, has joined the steering committee for the London trial. Also participating in the trial are Renault, U.K. minicab company Addison Lee, and Chargemaster, a leading European electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure operator, EE Times reported.

"Delta Motorsport has developed an advanced passenger EV that is a good platform to demonstrate our Qualcomm Halo Wireless EV Charging in pre-commercial deployments. Delta brings high-performance automotive engineering design to the London WEVC trial and the Delta E-4 Coupe displays technology at the cutting edge of EV innovation," Qualcomm Europe vice president of business development and marketing, Anthony Thomson, said in a statement.

Qualcomm said the objectives of the London trial are:
•To evaluate the commercial viability of the wireless charging of electric vehicles.
•ItTo develop a further understanding of issues relating to the integration of WEVC technology into EVs.
•To build knowledge associated with the deployment of WEVC into a megacity.
•To gain user feedback on the use of WEVC-enabled electric vehicles.

The maker of wireless telecommunications processors and equipment acquired U.K.-based Halo and its WEVC technology last November. According to EE Times, the Halo vehicle-charging system works via inductive charging "across the air gap between a transmitting pad in the road surface and a receiving pad on the underside of a vehicle," meaning it could be used for in-motion EV charging on future electric roadways.
